🤝 Players to look out for …
🇵🇹 Bruno Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes finished Euro 2024 qualifying as the leading assist maker, having delivered eight decisive passes. The Manchester United man is likely to find himself among the leading creators at the finals, too. He has the luxury of having some high-class teammates around him, most notably Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains one of the most potent finishers in the game.
Portugal also have an appetising-looking group, in which they will face Czechia, Turkey, and Georgia, who are arguably the weakest side in the whole draw.
🇵🇹 Bernardo Silva
Another to benefit from this is likely to be Manchester City star Bernardo Silva, who had four assists in qualifying. This equated to 0.54 per 90, some 0.34 behind his countryman but enough to make him a factor that should be considered ahead of the Euros finals.
If anything happens to Fernandes, who is likely to take many of the set pieces that are not in shooting positions (Cristiano Ronaldo will be allocated those), Silva could step up.
The Man Utd ace, though, did not have the best assist rate in qualifying.
🇳🇱 Denzel Dumfries
That honour went to the Netherlands’ Denzel Dumfries. The Inter star posted 0.89 assists per 90 in qualifying, and while he might be out of favour to some extent with his club side, he will be to the fore of Ronald Koeman’s plans in Germany.
With Poland, France and Austria lying in wait for the Dutch, Dumfries should fancy his chances of fashioning some big opportunities for his compatriots. It should be noted, though, that his five qualifying assists all came against opponents who finished in the bottom three of the group.
🇧🇪 Jeremy Doku
Jeremy Doku was also ahead of Bruno Fernandes when it came to minutes-per-assists. The Manchester City man chalked up 0.88 assists per 90 and did manage one against Austria, the other team to qualify from Belgium’s section.
Doku has earned a reputation while with City as being a devastating dribbler, and though his form has dipped in the second half of the campaign, he should benefit from being relatively fresh having played comparatively few club minutes.
🇫🇷 Kylian Mbappe
Although better known for his goal-scoring, Kylian Mbappe also makes an appearance on this list. The France star generated five assists in qualifying at the rate of 0.68 per 90 minutes.
He continued that strong form in Les Bleus’ recent friendlies. Although Didier Deschamps’ side were not at their best in those games, assists against Scotland and Chile highlight the fact that there is so much more to Mbappe’s game than finding the net and underscoring his value as one of the best all-round attackers in the world.
Mbappe is far more of a creative player than he is with PSG, where he creates a goal for a team-mate on 0.32 occasions every 90 minutes – less than half his rate in Euro 2024 qualifying. And he can afford to be a team player with the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud around him to put the ball in the net.
🏴 Andy Robertson
It is not just attackers who feature as dangerous chance creators, though.
Liverpool’s Andy Robertson was once famed for his assist battles at Anfield with Trent Alexander-Arnold. If the Englishman invariably gets the better of these, the Scotland captain is a player to look out for at Euro 2024.
While Gareth Southgate does not trust the right-back, Robertson is a valuable creative outlet for Scotland, both bombing down the wing and from set-piece situations.
This is reflected by the fact that he created 0.55 assists per 90 in qualifying, although the finals of the tournament are likely to prove substantially harder for Robertson and his colleagues.
After a difficult campaign at Anfield, he came on strong towards the end of the season.
Another left-back worth watching is Spain’s Jose Luis Gaya. Long associated with a move to one of the country’s big guns, he is still with Valencia.
His assist record at club level is not prolific, but with his country, he matches Robertson with 0.55 assists per 90 in qualifying matches.
🇪🇸 Nico Williams
The real one to watch with La Roja, however, could be Nico Williams. He played only 222 minutes of qualifying and generated three assists in that period. A quickly rising force domestically, if he get significant minutes at the finals, he could be a revelation, particularly as he is the type of dynamic forward that Spain look like they lack at times.
🇷🇸 Dusan Tadic
Keep an eye, too, on Dusan Tadic. Now 35 and playing with Fenerbahce, the veteran is gearing up for Euro 2024 clashes against England, Slovenia, and Denmark.
This isn’t the easiest run of games and if the Serbs are to progress they likely need their wily veteran to shine. He posted 0.56 assists per 90 in qualifying, but his game time will likely need managing in these matches. At his best, though, he is a wildcard to pick up a couple of assists or more.
🇩🇪 Florian Wirtz
Finally, arguably the best is saved until last: Florian Wirtz. Of course, the German playmaker did not feature in qualifying, but if the host nation go all the way in the competition, he will become a bona-fide Ballon d’Or candidate.
He has double figures in both goals and assists in the Bundesliga this season and should be Julian Nagelsmann’s chief creative force in the summer.
Wirtz posts 0.42 assists per 90 in the Bundesliga at the time of writing and stands on the brink of superstardom, with a big move expected in the next 12 months.
