FA Cup Final Preview

Chelsea come into this season’s FA Cup final in the midst of a wretched run of form. The Blues have lost 6 of their last 7 Premier League matches, though they did stop the rot with a spirited 1-1 draw away at Liverpool last time out. Any hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League have now gone up in smoke though, with an FA Cup triumph increasingly looking like Chelsea’s most realistic route into continental competition next season.

Scoring goals has proven to be a real issue for Chelsea of late, with the Blues blanking in 5 of their last 7 Premier League matches, which includes a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Caretaker Chelsea boss Calum McFarlane has leaned on a 4-2-3-1 formation during his two spells in the dugout this season. Alejandro Garnacho, Pedro Neto and Robert Sanchez are all rated as doubtful, while Benoit Badiashile, Estevao, Jamie Gittens and Jesse Derry are all expected to be sidelined at Wembley through injury.

Manchester City arrive at Wembley on the back of successive 3-0 home wins over Brentford and Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Those victories have ensured Pep Guardiola’s side remain firmly in the title race heading into the final two rounds of top-flight action, as they now trail Arsenal by just 2 points. It also means the Citizens have lost just 1 of their last 24 Premier League matches.

Manchester City boss Guardiola used a 4-1-3-2 formation against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, though he is expected to revert to his tried-and-trusted 4-2-3-1 system at Wembley on Saturday. Josko Gvardiol returned to the Man City line-up on Wednesday night after a lengthy layoff, leaving Rodri as the only fitness concern for Saturday’s FA Cup final, though there is optimism he will be available for selection.
