⚔️ Gameweek 29 Review – 79 Points (40 Average)
Double bubble! A superb week almost doubling the average score, and seeing my overall rank shoot up. It started well in the 3:00PM kick-offs with Milenkovic scoring, assisting, and notching a delightful 11 points; a clean sheet would have been the icing on the cake, but I will take double digits from my defender. Bowen (5 pts) and Mbeumo (5 pts) chipped in with an assist each for a respectful Saturday, the calm before the storm of what Sunday turned out to be.
Firstly, a nice clean sheet from Raya (6 pts) and just missing out on an extra save point, but the real deal came in the last kick-off of the weekend. I took a risk by captaining Bruno Fernandes, but it couldn’t have worked out any better. A goal, two assists, a clean sheet and all three bonus points gave him a score of 17 and as captain, a monstrous 34! Interestingly, the same score as in the reverse fixture at the beginning of the season.
The remainder of my squad were all one or two pointers, a few of them – especially Ait-Nouri playing against Southampton – fell below my expectations, but I can’t grumble at my score, especially when you factor in that I didn’t have to use my Free Hit chip.
📋 Gameweek 29 Transfers Recap
Each week so you know @FplVeteran is doing the demanding work for you, we revisit key decisions from last week’s review. This GW we revisit my Transfers In. My transfers out paid off even better, but with Bruno smashing it, I was always going to review his section. A huge points tally but most were surprised Wood didn’t get anything, considering Nottingham Forest scored four. I love this section, continuing to help FPL managers climb those ranks!
Player | Points |
Bruno Fernandes | 17 (34) |
Chris Wood | 2 |
Justin Kluivert | 2 |
Total | 21 (38) |
✅ The Best 3 Transfers IN for Gameweek 30
🇳🇴 Erling Haaland – Man City (£14.8m, 30.7%)
A man who needs no introduction or reasoning as to why he is my first transfer in this GW. Only being 22% owned until recently and back amongst the goals as Man City seem to find some form, perhaps I do need to clarify his selection.
Seven goals in his last 10 games including two in his last three sees a return to form for the frontman who comes back into our selection thinking. 0.75xG’s (expected goals) per 90 mins and 0.81 xGI (goal involvements), 21 goals, three assists and playing for the current champions of England, there’s clearly no shortage of advantageous points in which to own, but it’s his next fixture against Leicester that is the ultimate selling factor.
Leicester are so, so poor! Yes, the fact they are currently ahead of Southampton and have amassed 17 points, makes it seem like they have performed average at times this season, but be under no illusion that both of these teams are in fact overall the same. Some of the worst teams to ever step foot in the Premier League.
Leicester have conceded 35 goals in 14 away games (2.5 goals per game), including nine goals in the last four (2.25 per game), and not scoring in three of their last four. Man City have scored 30 goals in 14 home games this season including 13 goals in the last five (2.6 per game). Long story short, Man City good, Leicester bad, and Haaland scores a lot. It’ll be tough at his price to fit him in, but he’s worth it!
🇨🇴 Daniel Munoz – Crystal Palace (£5.1m, 15.5%)
Here we continue with the trend of aggressively attacking relegation-threatened teams. Munoz has already been spoken about but for some reason is still only just over 15% owned… So low in fact, he could have been on my differentials list. Crystal Palace currently are a strong defensive force, scoring then managing games well to completion, while churning out clean sheets (three in the last five) in the process.
One thing even better, that FPL managers love is an attacking defender that can build upon his clean sheet points. Daniel Munoz is a defender in the game by name only and a quick glance below at his overall heat map will show you he is more akin to an attacking winger than a defender.
Remember with Southampton the current bottom side in the league, his overall positioning will be further up the pitch leading to more goal involvements and ultimately more points. Already with three goals and five assists in only 27 starts, expect this number to increase this weekend and if the FPL gods are on our side, it could be both a goal and assist… Mega haul territory!
🇪🇬 Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (£13.7m – 69.2%)
FPL Veteran wait a minute, transferring in Haaland and Salah almost every GW is the play surely? Well, you would expect that but in actual fact, there is more to the story… Let me explain. With the blank GW (29), big fixture swing, and some teams doubling in the near future, more managers than you might think did the unthinkable and transferred out the King of FPL.
The main reason was to fund the inclusion of Haaland and though this is a sound strategy, I do think money can be found elsewhere, without dropping the highest points scorer EVER, in FPL history. It’s a scary watch if you don’t own him and though many have thoughts that the game v Everton at Anfield will be a close and can get away with not owning, I just plainly don’t think you can.
As Liverpool are now out of the Champions League and losing the League Cup final they can fully concentrate on closing out the league title and will want to bounce back immediately, especially against their fiercest rivals. Even if Salah and Liverpool don’t play well, he only needs one fraction of a chance. I can’t see him not returning and my advice is to make sure you own him.
❌ The Best 3 Transfers OUT for Gameweek 30
🏴 Cole Palmer – Chelsea (£10.8m, 51.8%)
FPL manager’s patience’ has finally run out. The no-show due to injury for the £10.8M Chelsea midfielder was the final nail in the coffin for most and he has already been removed by 310,000; already the top transferred out player for GW30. I took him out last week and I thought even that was too long to own without returning. One return in eight games isn’t enough even for a cheap asset, let alone a premium one.
It’s a wider symptom of Chelsea not playing well but with Tottenham and Brentford up next, I do not see the slump ending anytime soon. To compound matters, Palmer was a no-show against Arsenal and is currently flagged at 75%. With a longer time in between these two GWs, I imagine he will recover to full fitness but in a time that many managers require funds in which to buy the best players, Palmer is the clear makeweight.
His early blistering form and four goals against Brighton played a part as we all kept waiting and waiting for a repeat, but don’t wait any longer and remove immediately. He is not that guy currently and I’m not sure if he will be again this season.
🇬🇼 Beto – Everton (£5.1m, 7.7%)
Beto’s run as a spirit animal R9, is now thankfully over. From GW24 to 26, he scored four goals, seven bonus points and an overall FPL points total of 38 including a double-digit haul of 13pts. But with three blanks in a row, normal service has resumed and it’s about to get even more difficult to return any goal contribution. Up next are Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Man City and Chelsea.
As you are reading this I can tell your face is also winching at the close-to-zero chances I give him of returning anything until the Chelsea game in GW34. In the recent three games he has blanked in, these were against some of the weakest opponents in the league in the form of West Ham, Wolves and the slightly better but still often conceding Brentford.
With the forward options more in demand like the beginning of the season, you can ill afford a passenger in your side and Beto over the next month, will be the ultimate definition of such.
🇺🇦 Vitalii Mykolenko – Everton (£4.4m, 8.7%)
The second of our Everton players this GW. Not only do I see Everton not scoring many, but I also see them conceding many. The next set of five fixtures with Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal are just too tough to keep clean sheets in. In our squads, we need a good balance of cheap and expensive players and as Mykolenko is super cheap, most of the time we are happy for him to sit on our bench but over the next period of fixtures, every single player will be required.
Like me, many managers have most of their chips remaining and need to start setting up their team to utilise Bench Boost or navigate the double game weeks. Similarly, those with no or fewer chips remaining have to set their team up for the long term. If you are happy with him coming off the bench for a one-pointer then keep him but there are alternatives at the same price that will score you more points.
Top Tip – Another international break. Many international teams are playing more than one fixture within this two-week break so expect more than a few injuries or fitness concerns to crop up before the GW30 deadline. I like to wait until at least a few days before the next deadline when all players have returned to their domestic club sides and more concrete information can be provided. Sure you might lose a slight bit of value but that’s the better alternative to taking a hit for a player you have already transferred in.
🦸 Gameweek 30 Captaincy Selections
🇪🇬 Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (£13.7m, 69%)
There is only one! In a GW where the captaincy will be fairly split, there is only one selection I am ever going to pick. Having just broken the FPL points record, playing in his best-ever season and playing his rivals next, I foresee Salah taking no mercy and putting Everton to the sword with many returns and a huge points haul.
Alternative Captain Options
There are viable alternatives this GW that could pay off. Haaland against Leicester should be a high score, Isak against Brentford, they can’t stop conceding, and Mateta against Southampton, if he’s fit. Risky yet potentially heavily rewarding picks are Munoz against Southampton, Gvardiol against Leicester, and Bowen against Wolves.
Top three for me this GW: Salah, Haaland, Mateta.
👁️ FPL Veteran’s Vision and Verdict
With the international, break and a gap of almost two weeks, I always take my time in making moves within this window. Injuries always arise so unless you are certain what moves to make and you will be priced out if you don’t make it now, just wait. With 1 FT and £4m in the bank, I am fairly content with how my team is shaping up for GW30. I failed to make the move for Marmoush I was considering all week so he will come in, likely for Wissa as the Brentford double-up currently is a tad too much.
Nkunku and Chelsea’s form is a problem, so he is on the chopping block with my eyes on Kluivert or differentials Eze or Savinho. I prefer playing five across the midfield so likely I will take a hit for the Man City midfielder. With many of my chips remaining the focus is to form a fairly solid plan over the international break in which to use them. With only 9 GWs to go, we need to make a big push for as high a rank as possible team.
