Newell’s Old Boys v San Lorenzo
🏟
Friday 10th June – 12:00AM KO
After a pretty disastrous last season, going through several managers, San Lorenzo have barely improved. Last season they were marred with problems, bad financial issues, the players were afraid of violent fans and they finished close to bottom of the league, even putting them in relegation danger. Newell’s on the other hand were decent, since they changed goalkeepers last season they barely gave away goals and they should have qualified for the top four, if it wasn’t for an unfortunate last few matches.
San Lorenzo signed manager Ruben Dario Insua, which should be an improvement from youth coordinator and interim Fernando Berón, but the start of the season wasn’t good. They were completely outplayed by Independiente for the majority of the game and were lucky to get away with a draw. They also lost Cristian Zapata to injury and Siro Rosane with a red card, so neither will feature in this game. Nicolás Fernández, another regular in the side, is expected to leave the club in the next few days and didn’t make the squad either.
Newell’s claimed a very decent victory against Banfield last weekend. They dominated the entire game and took an easy three points. Newell’s have everyone available for this game, so no real changes are expected. A month ago, San Lorenzo did beat Newell’s when the situation for both teams wasn’t much different from now, but I don’t see San Lorenzo pulling that off again. The pressure is high and their midfield especially looks weak, so Newell’s should bag the three points.

Aldosivi v Estudiantes de la Plata
🏟
Friday 10th June – 11:00PM KO
It is chaos for Aldosivi at the start of this season. A couple of days before the start, manager Martín Palermo resigned. He stated the lack of involvement from the direction and the lack of signings as the reason. After the successful last season, where they reached the quarter-finals completely against the odds, it is also possible that he is mainly eyeing a move up soon.
The club owner immediately acted and sacked the technical director and came begging for Palermo to return, but the former international wouldn’t budge. They are still searching for a manager to take over. Last week they had reserves manager Yagui Fernandez, but they immediately sacked him and his team as well after the 2-1 defeat against Patronato to replace him with another interim.
Estudiantes on the other hand have no such issues, the season start wasn’t great with a home draw in the derby against Gimnasia, but the side looks steady. Aldosivi do still have top goal scorer Martin Cauterruccio, although every game could be his last, given he is a target for many bigger clubs in the league. Estudiantes have strikers Mauro Boselli and Gustavo del Prete up front, good for 13 goals last season, and they have no internal issues like the ones at Aldosivi. The lack of a manager and the chaos in Aldosivi are reason enough to dub Estudiantes as the big favorites to win this game.

Independiente v Talleres de Córdoba
🏟
Saturday 11th June – 1:30AM KO
Both teams are looking for revenge after a pretty bad last season and the start of this season has been OK for both sides. Independiente deserved more than a draw against San Lorenzo and especially striker Leandro Benegas was a constant threat for Independiente. Benegas needed some time to break into the team last season, but has since probably been their best player.
Talleres had a shocking season. They almost finished bottom of the league and that was a huge disappointment after the second place in 2021. Talleres struggled with some injuries and got rid of their manager early in the season. It was enough to get them through the Copa Libertadores group, but they pretty much gave up on the league. This season that should change and they started with a fairly dominant victory.
Especially going forward, they look stronger. River Plate loanee Federico Girotti is settled and starts looking more and more promising and Michael Santos, very important for them in 2021, but mostly injured last season, is getting back to form. Although both teams have a fairly steady defence as well, I don’t expect the teams to just sit back and wait, the strikers seem in form and especially Talleres manager Pedro Caixinha is not known to be a very defensive manager, so I expect a few goals here.
