France and Germany begin their Euro 2024 preparations in earnest in Lyon on Saturday, with Les Bleus heading into the competition in rather better shape than the tournament hosts.
Didier Deschamps’ side qualified for the finals with some ease, going close to a clean sweep of victories in their qualifying group. Only Greece denied them maximum points via a 2-2 draw in the final match.
The 2022 World Cup runners-up were absolutely ruthless, a fact highlighted by their record 14-0 win over Gibraltar in Nice.
Germany, meanwhile, are in an untimely period of transition. Their early exit from the 2022 World Cup saw the pressure of Hansi Flick and a run of one win in six friendlies in 2023 saw the coach ultimately dismissed.
Rudi Voller oversaw the 2-1 win over France in a Dortmund friendly last September but Julian Nagelsmann has since taken charge of the national team. His impact has not been as profound as might have been wished, with last year rounded out by defeats against Turkey in Berlin and Austria in Vienna.
Die Mannschaft are in urgent need of impetus, with just four matches remaining before they kick off Euro 2024 with a fixture against Scotland in Munich.

🏆 Match stats: Expect goals in this clash of the titans
Germany have been conceding goals all over the place for the best part of two years. In their last 22 international matches, they have kept only two clean sheets, with these coming against Oman and Peru. Coming up against a France attack that is one of the best in international football, they will be hard-pushed to shut out their hosts.
Les Bleus, meanwhile, haven’t been the most robust themselves at the back lately. Only once in their last five matches have they enjoyed a shutout.
Goals, then, should be expected at both ends in this game.
Furthermore, over 2.5 goals looks likely. France’s last six friendly internationals dating back to a 2020 match against Finland played in the era of closed-doors Covid matches, have all seen at least three goals. Seven of Germany’s 11 fixtures in 2023 saw the ball find the net on at least three occasions, including five of their last six.
France, meanwhile, are probably priced a little short given they were beaten by Germany last time out and this match is set to be treated with more urgency by their guests. Furthermore, the absence of talisman Antoine Griezmann from an international for the first time in seven years is a blow that appears to have been underrated.
Predictions:
⚽ Both teams to score @ 1.60
⚽ Over 2.5 goals @ 1.73
⚽ Germany (+0.5 handicap) @ 2.0
⚽ Germany (+2 handicap) @ 1.30
🎯 Shooting stats: Mbappe the major threat
While it is still unclear exactly how France will line up for this match, particularly with regards to who will replace the mercurial Griezmann, what does appear certain is that Kylian Mbappe will be given a good number of minutes.
The PSG attacker posted 3.16 shots on target per 90 in the most recent edition of the Nations League, which is the competition that pits Les Bleus against teams of their own standard. Expect him to play a significant role in this game. Backing him to have 2 or more shots on target at 1.73 looks a good addition to a France v Germany bet builder.
Mbappe has also scored in six of his nine France internationals since taking the captaincy. A price of him to do so again anytime at 1.80 is tempting.
A left-field option for France is Warren Zaire-Emery. By all accounts the young midfielder has impressed in training and is being tipped to start at the time of writing. Priced at 3.30 for a shot on target, he has worked the opposition goalkeeper in two of his last three starts at PSG.
Niclas Fullkrug and Deniz Undav are Germany’s shortest priced players at 1.36. Fullkrug’s low shot-on-target percentage suggests it might be wiser to back the Dortmund striker to have 2 shots if he starts. Undav, meanwhile, might have seen his goals dry up lately at Stuttgart, but he is still getting a good volume of shots on target.
Ilkay Gundogan’s price of 2.20 for 1 or more shots on target looks outstanding given he has worked the opposing goalkeeper four times in his last three Barcelona matches.
Backing anyone to have a high volume of efforts on target is risky given both managers are likely to share the minutes around extensively, with lots of substitutions likely.
Predictions:
⚽ Kylian Mbappe to have 2+ shots on target @ 1.73
⚽ Warren Zaire-Emery to have 1+ shots on target @ 3.30
⚽ Deniz Undav to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.36
⚽ Ilkay Gundogan to have 1+ shots on target @ 2.20
🛑 Fouls stats: Musiala the menace
Germany’s Jamal Musiala is a foul magnet, and given the volume of times he carries the ball in a game, that is little wonder. The Bayern man has been fouled multiple times in six of his last eight matches at club level. A price of 1.10 on him to win one free kick looks a simple way to boost a France v Germany Bet Builder.
This is likely to be a game with a relatively low foul count, and while referee Jesus Gil Manzano posts more than four yellow cards per game on average this season, the card count is liable to be low given the nature of this encounter.
Looking at France players who might get on the wrong side of the referee, Adrien Rabiot is a main contender. Before picking up injury, he had committed at least one foul in 15 of 17 matches. The drawback for the Juventus star is that his recent lack of minutes could count against him having a big role in this match.
Youssouf Fofana could profit from Rabiot’s injury issues and is another player who posts a big foul count. The Monaco midfielder, has exactly 3 fouls in four of his last nine matches. If he starts, odds of 1.33 on him to commit a single foul are huge.
Predictions:
⚽ Jamal Musiala to win 2+ fouls @ 1.57
⚽ Adrien Rabiot to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.30
⚽ Youssouf Fofana to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.33
