Fixtures for: Wednesday 1st October

Barcelona v PSG

Champions League

20:00

Over 2.5 Goals

Whenever Barcelona play, goals usually come. Hansi Flick’s side have scored 21 goals across their seven league games already this season (3.0 per game), which is a record that suggests that the home side could end up covering this line on their own here.

I did have a brief look at BTTS, but I’d prefer to back goals with the injuries that PSG are currently facing. They’ll be without Doue and Dembele for this game, as well as there being doubts around the fitness of Vitinha, Kvaratskhelia, Ruiz, and Neves. I do think some of these players will start but the biggest misses are in the PSG frontline so they could be a bit blunted here.

That being said, Luis Enrique will have a plan in place and be actively aware of the high line that Barcelona play which can be comical at times. PSG should get a few chances if they are direct which is what may be the preferred method of the former Barcelona boss as he is missing his best players in the final third.

Barcelona have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of their eight matches across all competitions this season, including their opening game of the league phase campaign against Newcastle. They’ve only kept three clean sheets across this period so it’s fair to say that Barcelona’s focus is on outscoring the opposition rather than defensive stability.

Arsenal v Olympiacos

Champions League

20:00

Over 2.5 Goals

Arsenal look to be the most complete side in the Premier League at the moment and can go one better than their performance against Athletic Club to cover the over 2.5 goal line here.

Arsenal have scored nine goals across their three home games this season, scoring  3+ goals in two of these matches against Leeds and Nottingham Forest. I’d expect a similar level of dominance from Arsenal here as they had in those games, which they won 3-0 and 5-0.

Arsenal won six of their eight matches in the league phase of the Champions League last season, scoring 16 goals across these games - nine of which came in their four home matches.

Furthermore, Arsenal scored 35 goals across their 19 home games in the Premier League last season (1.84 per game). I’d expect this record to improve this campaign with the extra attacking assets they have added to the squad over the summer.

Olympiacos will find it difficult to breach Arsenal’s stubborn backline but I’d back the Gunners to cover this line on their own anyway. If you’re interested in a slightly higher odds selection for this game, Arsenal to score 3+ goals is priced at 1.83.

Napoli v Sporting

Champions League

20:00

Over 2.5 Goals

Antonio Conte is already being a bit prickly in his press conferences, which is to be expected when the well-travelled manager enters his second season at a club. I remember his demise at Chelsea well, and some of the early signs at Napoli this season are similar.

Napoli have seen over 2.5 goals in each of their last two matches, conceding 2+ goals in each of these games. This is quite strange for a side like Napoli, who are usually quite defensively secure, but they haven’t been as tight at the back so far this season.

They face up against a Sporting side that has seen over 2.5 goals in four of their last five matches across all competitions. They saw five goals in their opening game of the league phase against Kairat Almaty and can take advantage of the issues that Napoli are currently facing defensively.
