Inter Milan v Napoli United Cheat Sheet
Inter Milan v Napoli
Wednesday, 4th January sees the return of Serie A and the day’s action is beautifully structured to build towards the standout fixture of the bunch, with early runaway leaders Napoli travelling north to face Inter at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan.
Napoli have undeniably been not only Italy’s entertainers this season, but Europe’s most exciting team as well. Luciano Spalletti’s Partenopei have stormed their way through anybody trying to stand in their way so far this term and, with 15 Serie A matches played, they remain unbeaten. They also came through a tough Champions League group as winners as well, losing only once in the group stage and even that came on the final matchday away at Liverpool in a game that was never likely to have any impact on their status as group winners.
Domestically, Napoli haven’t dropped a single point since August. Then, they drew back-to-back matches but have won every outing since. In their 15 games so far this season, they’ve racked up a frightening 37 Serie A goals, giving any defence that has to even think about facing them sleepless nights.
Inter, for their part, have been far more inconsistent than their opponents on Wednesday, but their 34 Serie A goals has them second only to Napoli as the highest scorers in Italy despite being as low as fifth in the table. Curiously, Inter are yet to draw this season but have lost five of their 15 games, showing that they are very much an all-or-nothing side under Simone Inzaghi.
On Wednesday night, then, we should be in for a thriller and a season-defining game for both. Inter cannot afford to lose if they are to have any chance at winning the scudetto, and Napoli will want to pass yet another big test of their own title credentials.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s start to life in Serie A has been nothing short of phenomenal. Having arrived in Italy as a relative unknown, the task placed on his shoulders was huge after the departures of both Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens in attack. But, he has not only taken on that weight of responsibility, but he has thrived under it.
In just 12 Serie A appearances so far this season, the man christened ‘Kvaradona’ in Naples – big praise there of all places – has scored six times and added a further seven assists, thus allowing him to boast a record that betters one goal involvement per game.
Taking the Champions League and Nations League appearances with Georgia into consideration, that record only looks better. In all, he’s played 23 times this season, scoring 13 goals and assisting 13 more. His record of a goal involvement per game also holds up in Europe, with two goals and three assists in five outings.
Back from an injury and ready to go, it’s hard to see him not having a hand in a goal at the Meazza on Wednesday.
Nicolo Barella is one of the most exciting and energetic midfielders in Italy, as well as being the man that many have assigned the task of having to lead Italy’s midfield for years to come. He has earned that reputation and level of expectation with his consistently-excellent performances since coming through at Cagliari before joining Inter.
He is all-action and combative, as well as being gorgeously gifted technically, and he has a hot-headed streak that can land him in trouble from time to time. Never shy of flying into a challenge, it’s bordering on astonishing that he only has two yellow cards to his name in Serie A this season.
Those came against Roma and Fiorentina though in close-fought contests, and that tally of two is likely to increase this midweek. It’s going to be a battle in Milan, and with Marcelo Brozovic absent for the Nerazzurri there is even more work for Barella to do. It’s hard to see 90 minutes passing without him finding his name in the referee’s notebook – whether it’s a foul made to waste time and hold onto a lead, one that stems from frustration, or just a slightly mistimed 50-50 challenge over a loose ball in the middle of the park.
Barella to be Shown a Card is also a selection in our Serie A Value Bets which can be found on Andy’s Bet Club or using the link above.
There’s a strong temptation to touch wood with crossed fingers while writing this, but goals should be a guarantee in this one. Italy’s two top-scoring sides are facing off and they are each averaging over two goals per game in Serie A this season.
Inter’s total of 34 goals is bettered only by Napoli’s 37, and no other side in Italy’s top flight have even hit 30 yet this season. While both are good at the back, the two are undeniably at their best when moving forward in search of goals and that should lead to an open, end-to-end and thrilling game at the Meazza. With Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen leading Napoli and although World Cup winner Lautaro Martinez isn’t expected to feature in the XI they will have Romelu Lukaku in his place to accompany Edin Dzeko.
