Kolkata Knight Riders v Sunrisers Hyderabad
📅
Start Time: Sunday 26th May at 19:30
🏆
Competition: Indian Premier League
IPL 2024 reaches its conclusion on Sunday, with a match between two extremely worthy finalists. It has been a campaign characterised by fearless batting and some extremely high-scoring games that won’t be forgotten in a hurry. Before IPL 2024, an innings score of 260+ runs had only been achieved once – by Royal Challengers Bengalore in 2023. This season, 260+ runs have been scored in seven separate innings.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are responsible for two of those, having scored 261 runs against Punjab Kings, and 272 against Delhi Capitals. But runs might be few and far between at Chennai on Sunday – it’s a track that has generally favoured the bowlers, with long straight boundaries. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will have the advantage having just played Qualifier 2 in the same stadium, although a different track will be used.
KKR will be vying for their third IPL title, having won their most recent trophy a decade ago in 2014. It’s a big occasion for SRH too, who won their maiden IPL title back in 2016 and find themselves in their first IPL final since 2018.

KKR v SRH Best Bets
➡️ T Natarajan and Sunil Narine to take 1+ wickets each @ 1.80 on Paddy Power
Sunil Narine has been impressive with bat and ball this season, but the West Indian is one of the only players in the competition to have taken a wicket in every game so far. Narine has bowled the most overs for KKR this season, and has taken a wicket in each of the 13 games played so far – including a wicket in both H2H games against SRH.
Natarajan squeezed Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 with figures of 1-13 from three overs. The Indian seamer has the accuracy and control to trouble KKR’s bludgeoning batting lineup – making the odds of 1.80 on the double a bet of standout value.
⚔️ KKR v SRH Head-to-Head
KKR eased past SRH in Qualifier 1, chasing the target of 159 within 14 overs. Mitchell Starc got KKR off to the best possible start, scalping the elusive Travis Head for a second-ball duck. Vaibhav Arora capitalised on early momentum, taking the wicket of Abhishek Sharma.
Rahul Tripathi fought back with a half-century, but SRH struggled to string together a meaningful partnership, and stumbled to a humble score of 159 all out. All six KKR bowlers took a wicket, but it was Mitchell Starc the standout – with figures of 3-34 from his four overs.
KKR got off to a solid start with the bat, which really stacked the odds against SRH. Rahmanullah Gurbaz slotted in nicely alongside Narine, who put up a 44-run opening stand in a short time. Despite losing both openers in quick succession, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer both scored half-centuries, and carried KKR to the final of IPL 2024 with a 97-run partnership. KKR chased the total comfortably within 14 overs, without needing the batting services of Andre Russell, Rinku Singh or Ramandeep Singh.
📊 KKR Form and Stats
Prior to that game, KKR were afforded a ten-day break, owing to two consecutive games abandoned due to rain. Given that KKR had won the previous four games, there were concerns surrounding a potential loss of rhythm from such a long break – KKR put those swiftly to bed. It’s been a resurgent showing from the east-Indian side, who posted 20 points and a top-place finish in the league format.
A large part of that success can be attributed to the incredible performances of Sunil Narine. Reinstated as the opening batsman, the West Indian has accumulated the most runs for KKR this season, averaging 37.1 runs per game at a mammoth 180 strike rate. He has also bowled 51 overs for KKR this season – the most in the team. Narine has amassed the third-most wickets for KKR this season, behind Harshit Rana and fellow spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, although Narine’s economy rate of just 6.9 runs per over is seriously impressive.
📊 SRH Form and Stats
Having hit the ground running, SRH managed five wins and two losses in IPL 2024, which put them comfortably in play-off contention. Despite runs continuing to flow, SRH have seemingly lost their winning touch towards the back-end of the tournament. Crucially, they beat RR in Qualifier 2, which means they have secured a spot in the final, and a replay of Qualifier 1 against KKR.
Having been put in to bat first, SRH stumbled to a respectable total of 175/9 thanks to a half-century from Heinrich Klaasen. It was a different kind of innings for the South African, who stepped up to the crease earlier than usual, having to play an anchoring role.
Openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma are the top scorers for SRH this season, and deserve a lot of credit hitting hard right from ball one. Knockout fixtures have been tough for the pair, though. The SRH opening stand was broken in the first over in both knockout games so far. Head was dismissed for a second-ball duck in Qualifier 1 against KKR, while Sharma managed just three runs off four balls.
In the second knockout against RR, Head managed 34 runs at an uncharacteristically low 121 strike rate, while Sharma got 12 runs off five balls before falling to Trent Boult. Given how much SRH rely on their opening pair, they will need to re-discover some of their early season form for any chance of victory.
