Nottingham Forest v Man United

📅

Kick Off: Tuesday 1st April at 20:00

🏆
Competition: Premier League

Champions League chasing Nottingham Forest welcome Manchester United to the City Ground with Ruben Amorim’s side languishing in the lower reaches of the Premier League, and perhaps turning their attentions to the Europa League in search of a successful season. Manchester United had some success just before the international break, progressing to the quarter-finals of the Europa League and holding Arsenal to a draw at Old Trafford.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side booked a spot at Wembley on Saturday evening, seeing off Brighton on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup to add to their league success this campaign.

The race for the Champions League spots is still quite tight, Forest have a five-point cushion to Chelsea in fourth for now, but a tough run of fixtures to come could make this a much more slender lead - making their home games from here on in crucial.

This game has all the makings of quite a tense and awkward encounter, Forest boast the best home defensive record in the Premier League this season (10 goals conceded) whilst Manchester United have struggled to break down compact defences with their limited options in forward areas, particularly since January with the departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony.

This sets up what should be quite a tight game, especially when combined with the fact that this is Manchester United’s first game since the international break, and that Forest had to play 120 minutes on Saturday evening - in a game that finished 0-0. Chris Wood is still a doubt for Forest for this encounter, which would certainly aid our selection here, Forest can be a bit blunt without Wood demonstrated by the fact that there is a 13-goal gap between Wood (18) and Forest’s second top scorer this season in Anthony Elanga (5).

Manchester United aren’t likely to spring too many surprises here, they’re very predictable in attacking areas, which will play right into the hands of Forest’s defensive resilience. Manchester United have struggled in the first half of games in particular, scoring in just 21% of their away games in the first half this season. The first half is where there is likely to be a blank on the scoresheet when considering United’s dysfunctional attacking setup matched by a stubborn Forest rearguard.

🔍 Nottingham Forest v Man United Players to Watch

🔵 Patrick Dorgu

Patrick Dorgu has been bright since joining Manchester United from Lecce in the January transfer window. He’s a magnet for fouls and is likely to be involved early on here.

He’s committed four fouls across his three Premier League appearances so far for the Red Devils (1.61 per 90) and averaged 1.17 fouls committed per 90 across his 21 appearances in Serie A, prior to joining Ruben Amorim’s side.

Dorgu will have a tough assignment in managing Anthony Elanga when Forest look to break forward on transition - the former United winger is averaging 1.46 fouls won per 90 across his 29 appearances in the Premier League this season. Elanga was fouled once in just 10 minutes of action in the initial meeting between these sides at Old Trafford.

🔴 Anthony Elanga

Elanga has been one of Forest’s brightest players this season, registering 13 goal contributions across his 29 Premier League appearances.

Only Chris Wood has scored more goals for Nottingham Forest this season, with the former Manchester United winger averaging 1.60 shots per 90 in the Premier League this campaign. Elanga was bright just before the international break in netting a brace against Ipswich and can act as a real attacking threat here when Manchester United lose the ball in transition.

There isn’t a better side than Nottingham Forest in the Premier League when it comes to counter-attacks, and they should be able to catch out Ruben Amorim’s side on a few occasions.
