The second-ever meeting of these two clubs will decide whether Atalanta advance to a first-ever European final in the club’s 116-year history, or whether Marseille will reach their first European final since 2018, which ended in a 3-0 Europa League defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Although the Italian side will likely be the happier of the two coming into leg two, both sides have it all to play for at the Gewiss Stadium to progress to the final in Dublin. 

Atalanta got off to a flying start in the contest, courtesy of yet another goal for Gianluca Scammaca. That was soon cancelled out by a stunning strike from Chancel Mbemba, from well outside the Atalanta penalty area.

Atalanta have been in imperious home form this season, having lost just four games in total. One of those losses came against Liverpool in the previous round of this competition, where the Italian side already had a three-goal cushion from the first leg and therefore could afford to lose and still progress.

Scamacca has been pivotal to the success of the Bergamo side, having scored nine goals in his last nine starts. The former West Ham striker has turned up in the knockout games – scoring in both legs against Sporting Lisbon in the round of 16, followed by a brace at Anfield to secure their 3-0 win against Liverpool.

His goal last week takes his tally up to six, meaning he still has some ground to make up to catch Europa League top scorer, Marseille’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The aforementioned Aubameyang will need to be on top form if Marseille are to have any chance of progression into the Europa League final.

The Gabon international has scored in 16 games this season, and Marseille have gone on to win 11 of those. He managed five shots in the first leg, amounting to a total of 0.54 xG, but failed to make it count as Mbemba got Marseille’s only goal of the game. 

A busy summer transfer period for Marseille has failed to pay dividends, as they currently sit eighth in Ligue 1. In their last 10 games, Marseille have managed just two wins, with away form a particular concern.

That 10-game stretch has featured five away games – four of which ended in defeat for Marseille, and the other a 2-2 draw, with at least two goals conceded in each trip.
