Notts County v Crewe
📅
Kick Off: Saturday 22nd March at 12:30
🏆
Competition: League Two
5th place Notts County host 8th place Crewe on Saturday lunchtime, as the League Two promotion battle rounds the turn for home.
Such is the bunched nature of the league this season, with even runaway leaders Walsall now back in striking distance, either of these sides could end up automatically promoted or in mid table.
⭐ Notts County v Crewe Best Bet
This is a high stakes game for both sides with matches running out, and we think the draw is the most likely outcome.
A draw for Notts County keeps them in the top seven for another set of fixtures, whilst a draw for Crewe would probably be seen as a good result against a fellow promotion challenger.
Crewe have drawn 15 of their 37 games. nine of those 15 have come away from home, where their games tend to be low margin. They average exactly one goal for per away game, and just less than a goal per game against on the road.
Whilst draws at Meadow Lane have been the least common result, County have won just one of their last four home games.
👕 Notts County v Crewe Predicted XI
🔍 Notts County v Crewe Players to Watch
⚫ David McGoldrick
McGoldrick has recently returned from injury and will be hoping to add to the 14 goals he has already notched this season.
County will need him, with top goalscorer Alassana Jatta on international duty with Gambia. McGoldrick actually has a better goals-per-90 ratio than Jatta this season, only surpassed by Nathan Lowe and Danny Johnson at Walsall.
An interesting quirk of McGoldrick’s exploits in front of goal this season is that he has scored a brace on four separate occasions. He has started 20 games, scoring in 10 of them.
He will have to overcome the second best away defence in the league to do so, but we are getting an inviting price at 9/1.
🔴 Tom Lowery
Midfielder Tom Lowery is back on loan at Crewe from Portsmouth, having come through their academy and been one of their star players in the David Artell era.
He has started the Railwaymen’s last seven games, having featured as a substitute in his first two games back. He has already scored twice, one coming from the penalty spot, and is currently averaging 0.28 goals per 90. The last time he played at League Two level he scored five goals in 29 appearances, at a rate of 0.19 per 90.
To be getting a price of 9/1 about Lowery scoring anytime seems a few ticks higher than it should be.

💻 Notts County v Crewe Form and Tactics
Last season, Notts County were a very strong attacking side, but also one of the worst defensive units in League Two, which hampered any challenge they wanted to mount for promotion, together with the departure of Luke Williams to Swansea.
Williams was replaced by current manager Stuart Maynard, who after a pretty non-descript spell towards the end of last season, has got his messages across this season, and maintained County’s attacking flair, whilst also creating a solid defensive unit. County are top of metrics such as xG, shots on target per match and big chances created, whilst having the sixth-best defence in terms of goals conceded. They’ve only won once in their last five games, however.
Crewe were beaten play-off finalists last season, and hope to be in the mix again this term. Their underlying numbers are a lot stronger this season compared to last, but they now found themselves just outside the top seven.
They have conceded the fifth-fewest goals per game this season. However, despite having the sixth-best xG for, they have only scored the 15th-highest number of goals per match, which suggests finishing chances has been their Achilles’ heel. Their top goalscorer is on just seven goals this season. Crewe have won just two of their last 11 games, recording five draws in that spell.
