QPR v Sheffield United Cheat Sheet
QPR v Sheffield United
It is already beginning to look as though the automatic promotion places in the Championship are sewn up. Burnley are 11 points and a game in hand clear of 3rd place and Sheffield United sit only three points behind The Clarets.
This demonstrates how much more consistent the top two have been in comparison to the rest of the league. The cycle of wins and losses and turmoil has also already seen to a faintly ridiculous number of managerial changes too. QPR have been subject to a change in the dugout and there appease to be some teething problems. The Blades arrive hunting for automatic promotion, looking to extend the gap between themselves and the congested top half of the Championship.
The main problems for the Super Hoops come in the form of creating chances and scoring goals. Whilst Lyndon Dykes has never really been a prolific scorer, the group of technical chance creators including Chris Willock, Ilias Chair, Stefan Johansen, Olamide Shodipo, and others, have tended to keep the supply high enough.
Under Critchley so far there has been a slight tweak to the style of play, with fewer players able to help on the ball in the forward areas. Though long term this could churn out more consistent results, at the moment it is resulting in a hindered goal return.
Sheffield United are ones who tend to keep it tight on the road in any case. Around half of their away matches have ended in clean sheets and their 10 goals conceded away from home is the fewest in the division. However, they don’t tend to turn the attacking taps on too hard either with only 17 goals scored in 13 matches. This record still puts them top of the away table.
The referee for the match is Josh Smith. This will be his 18th assignment of the season and in his previous 17 he has averaged 5.18 yellows per game.
This is quite a high average for England, and the good news is that Sheffield United have a decent record of picking up cautions too, 54 yellows and 2 reds so far this season, putting them 6th in the league for poor disciplinary record. QPR are not as prevalent in the disciplinary charts but there will be no doubt that there will be plenty of battling for supremacy in this match.
In QPR matches since the return from the World Cup the sequence of yellow cards per game has been 3,4,5,4. Sheffield United have gone 4,4,5,0, so in six out of the eight matches these teams have played they have gone over the 3.5 card line.
With a referee who has a strong record in giving out cautions it is worth adding the 3.5 card line to the bet builder.
In relation to the referee and the midfield battle, Sam Field is worth backing to find his way into the referee’s notebook.
Field is the main man in the QPR midfield with responsibility for retrieving the ball. Over the last 11 matches, Field has made at least five more tackles than the next nearest QPR player and also more fouls than any other. He has also picked up 3 cards in that period.
Field also ranks inside the top 5 players for fouls committed in the QPR squad, as per the above Cheat Sheet averaging 1.33 fouls per 90.
With the likes of Sander Berge marauding from central midfield it may be required of a central midfielder from the opposition to, at some stage, sacrifice themselves in order to stop the progress of the big Norwegian. Or alternatively Field may press onto Oli Norwood to disrupt the flow of possession or attempt to pick up James McAtee and bring him down as a result of quick feet on the dribble. Sheffield United’s midfield can cause a myriad of problems.
Despite this, Field isn’t at the top of the market for a card. His midfield partner Tim Ireogbunam is a shorter price despite being behind Field in those key data points, this makes Field a better bet in this builder.
