England begin their final World Cup preparations with a clash against New Zealand, before taking on Costa Rica ahead of their first group game against Croatia at the World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel has gone through a bit of a storm following his squad selection, but is adamant that he’s picked the best team for international football and a knockout tournament, with the German coach previously leading Chelsea to a Champions League title.

New Zealand will also feature at the World Cup this summer, but their recent results - including a 4-0 thrashing by Haiti, don’t fill many with confidence that they could spring a surprise.

4 Selections @ 4.00

Jude Bellingham to have 1+ Shots on Target @ 1.90

This is quite a generous price for a player that usually turns up for England, and has a point to prove here with Tuchel hinting towards preferring Morgan Rogers in this role.

Bellingham had 15 shots across his four starts during qualifying, working out to an average of 3.80 shots per 90 - an increase on his shot average of 2.39 shots per 90 for Real Madrid in La Liga this term.

He saw five of those attempts find the target (1.27 per 90), and was important for England in the last Euros as he scored twice on the way to the final.

Chris Wood to have 1+ Shots @ 1.25

Chris Wood is the most established and recognised player in the New Zealand squad, and has scored 45 goals across his 87 caps for his national side.

Wood took 23 shots across his 11 starts during the Premier League season, which was heavily affected by injury, working out to an average of 2.28 shots per 90.

Remarkably, he scored nine goals from nine shots during qualifying for New Zealand - leaving him with another healthy shot average of 2.45 per 90 on the international stage.

Ezri Konsa to be Fouled 1+ Times @ 1.29

Both Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa are worth watching to win fouls at this World Cup. Tuchel likes his centre backs to be comfortable on the ball, and I think this is why he’s opted for these two in particular.

Konsa is very comfortable with the ball at his feet, playing for a Villa side who usually play the ball through central areas. This sees him get lots of touches (72.3 per 90) and win fouls consistently (1.19 per 90).

Konsa won 13 fouls across just six starts for England during the qualifying campaign (2.11 per 90), further confirming that this is a crucial part of his game.

England (-1) Handicap @ 1.36

New Zealand were thrashed by Haiti in their opening warm-up game for the World Cup, losing 4-0, which is a real warning sign ahead of their World Cup campaign.

New Zealand have failed to keep a clean sheet across their last 10 matches, and face off against an England side who didn’t concede a single goal during their qualifying campaign.

New Zealand don’t really have the defensive organisation to keep England at bay, they’ve conceded 2+ goals against the likes of Ecuador, Colombia, and Finland in recent months to go alongside their heavy loss to Haiti. England need to win by two or more goals for this leg to land.

📈 England v New Zealand Form, Stats & Team News

It was only a friendly game, but New Zealand’s 4-0 loss to Haiti was a real surprise and a bit of a warning sign with only a week to go until the World Cup starts. They do have some notable players, such as Chris Wood, but there is a lack of quality overall which makes them likely to struggle in this World Cup, probably as one of the few sides that exit the tournament in the early stages.

England have been preparing for the World Cup in intense weather conditions, with the main message coming out of their camp being about the heat. England have a gruelling travel schedule at the World Cup to add to this, which is something to keep an eye on - many of England’s star players like Declan Rice and Harry Kane have already played over 50 games during the regular season, so fatigue could be a real factor.

England breezed through qualifying, but friendly matches have proven to be a bit more challenging to Tuchel’s side. They lost to Senegal last year at Wembley, and have also been held by Uruguay and beaten by Japan in recent friendly matches. We can’t read too much into those games as Tuchel was clearly experimenting with some styles and players, but it is a pattern worth noting.

📔 England v New Zealand Formation & Team News

New Zealand went with a 4-2-3-1 against Haiti last time out, with Chris Wood leading the line, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with a more conservative shape for this game after what happened against Haiti. That result will have really damaged the confidence of the squad, so manager Darren Bazeley will want to make sure that his side are a little tighter at the back after they underestimated Haiti.

England should line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape. We already know that Alex Scott will start, suggesting that Tuchel may field quite a rotated lineup for this opening game. The chance of injury is very real, and he won’t want to risk too many of his star players just a week before the tournament starts. An injury to crucial players like Harry Kane or Jordan Pickford, would be near catastrophic for England at this point in the preparation.
