Rangers have the opportunity to move to the top of the Scottish Premiership table for the first time this season when they host Aberdeen at Ibrox. Victory by three clear goals would push Philippe Clement’s side above Celtic and strike an important psychological blow in the title race, with the Gers having at one stage been seven points behind their neighbours.
This has been made possible thanks to Rangers’ electric form since Clement took charge of the team in the autumn. Points have only been spilt in two of their 15 league matches under the Belgian: once against Celtic and once against Tuesday’s opponents.
Of course, Aberdeen are also hoping to be inspired by a change of management, with Neil Warnock named as their new boss on Monday following the sacking of Barry Robson late last week. Peter Leven is liable to play the key role in managing the Dons, having masterminded a 1-1 draw against Celtic at the weekend that might well have ended in victory with a little more luck.
The Pittodrie club have already won 3-1 at Ibrox earlier this season in the match that saw the end of Michael Beale’s spell at Ibrox, but they were beaten in the last meeting between the teams, when Rangers claimed a 1-0 win in the League Cup final.

🏆 Match stats: Aberdeen to make a game of it
Rangers are red-hot favourites for this match, with the Gers priced at 1.20 for the victory, yet their previous matches against Aberdeen this season do not justify such a short price. The Dons have lost only one of the three matches against their Glasgow rivals this season, and that was by a 1-0 scoreline in a competitive encounter.
Indeed, there is a theory that Aberdeen matchup better against the Premiership’s stronger teams and tend to struggle more against the opponents that they should beat on paper. Last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Celtic certainly lends credence to this belief, with the Dons finishing that match much the stronger side.
There will be no shortage of enthusiasm from the Reds either. With a new manager in the dugout, there is ample reason for the visiting players to be even more fired up than ever, even if the Aberdeen stats suggest they should be swept aside.
Head-to-head, too, shows that this is typically a competitive fixture. Aberdeen have lost only two of their last 11 against Rangers by more than a single goal.
Rangers must win the match by three goals or more for this bet to lose.
Predictions:
⚽ Aberdeen (+3 handicap) @ 1.36
🎯 Shooting stats: Barron a high-priced outsider
Rangers’ stats show that both Rabbi Matondo and Fabio Silva are both hitting more than 4 shots per 90 minutes, but the likelihood of Clement risking many of his forward players for the duration of the match is slim. Indeed, the Belgian will hope to start making changes around the 60 or 70-minute mark given the club’s hectic fixture list.
For this reason, too, he will make significant changes from the side that started against Livingston at the weekend, with Cyriel Dessers likely to get the nod from the outset of the match in the No. 9 role. He is favourite to get shots off, priced at 1.14 for one and 1.73 for two.
Perhaps the trickiest part of picking who will carry Rangers’ threat is selecting who might start. At 1.40, Todd Cantwell carries strong value given he averages nearly a shot on target per match and can be used in a variety of roles, increasing the likelihood of him starting.
Bojan Miovski is Aberdeen’s most obvious threat, and at 1.67, the North Macedonia international looks an interesting price, yet it is midfielder Connor Barron at 5.0 who looks outstanding value for just one shot on target.
Barron has been used more in recent weeks with a contract issue seemingly pushed to one side, and with 0.39 shots on target per 90 minutes, he ranks third among Aberdeen’s likely starters.
Predictions:
⚽ Cyriel Dessers to have 2+ shots on target @ 1.73
⚽ Todd Cantwell to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.40
⚽ Connor Barron to have 1+ shots on target @ 5.0
🛑 Fouls stats: Gartenmann a big price
Rotation will again be central to the home side’s team selection here so it is worth waiting until the lineups are out before pulling the trigger on a Rangers bet builder in particular.
Fabio Silva boasts a high foul count in his relatively short game-time with the club, but is likely to be benched or switched out wide to make way for Dessers through the centre. The Nigerian is higher priced at 1.20 to make a foul and, therefore, offers better value.
Rabbi Matondo offers a good price for two fouls committed at 2.80 but this hinges on him starting, which seems unlikely due to Clement’s rotation, while the value that was there previously on Dujon Sterling just a matter of weeks ago has dissipated somewhat. Todd Cantwell at 1.30 to make a foul looks the surest thing for a Rangers bet builder.
Aberdeen’s main criminal, Graeme Shinnie, is unsurprisingly short priced and offers limited value but centre back Stefan Gartenmann is good value at 1.40 given that he is likely to start due to Slobodan Rubezic missing out injured. Gartenmann averages more than a foul per 90 and will be embroiled in a physical battle no matter who he is up against. He has committed at least two fouls in five of his last 10 Premiership matches and gave away three when he last faced Rangers in the league.
Predictions:
⚽ Todd Cantwell to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.30
⚽ Stefan Gartenmann to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.40
⚽ Stefan Gartenmann to commit 2+ fouls @ 3.0
