Level 1 Bet Builder Tip
🛑 Jefte to commit 1+ fouls
📈 Odds: 1.36
Look to Rangers left-back Jefte to commit at least one foul on Thursday night. The young Brazilian is a fierce competitor, evidenced by the fact that he has given away one free-kick or more in each of his four Scottish Premiership appearances this season. That has coincided with him collecting a yellow card in three of his four Scottish top-flight outings this term.
In fact, it was Jefte’s ill-discipline that saw him miss Rangers’ 2-0 win over Malmo. The 20-year-old was suspended for the trip to Sweden last week after being sent off during Rangers’ 2-0 defeat to Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League qualification. Jefte will likely be up against Lyon’s Ernest Nuamah, who has been fouled three times across his four appearances this season, including once in last week’s 2-0 win over Olympiakos.
🛑 Robin Propper to commit 1+ fouls
📈 Odds: 1.40
Rangers new centre-half Robin Propper has been throwing his weight around across the opening stretch of the season and he stands out to fall foul of the referee on at least one occasion on Thursday night. The Dutchman has committed an offence in three of his opening four Scottish Premiership appearances, the most recent of which saw him receive a yellow card against Hibernian on Sunday.
It’s also worth noting that he sinned twice in Rangers’ 2-0 success in Sweden last week. The 31-year-old was averaging a shade under one foul per-game in the Eredivisie with Twente last term, not to mention he collected nine yellow cards across all competitions.
Propper’s defensive workload should increase on matchday two given that Lyon will represent a real step up in class. He should have his hands full with experienced Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, who has drawn a combined total of six fouls across his six appearances for the French side this season.
🛑 Nemanja Matic to commit 1+ fouls
📈 Odds: 1.67
Nemanja Matic will be patrolling the space in front of Lyon’s back four and that should see him tackle his way into trouble at least once at a cauldron-like Ibrox.
The experienced Serbian has never been one to shy away from a tackle throughout his career. Matic has committed a foul in each of his last four appearances for Lyon, including three in a recent away game at Lens. He clocked up a sizeable nine yellow cards across his 28 Ligue 1 appearances last season, making him a standout selection to commit at least one foul on Thursday night.
Matic will most likely be keeping tabs on Rangers Tom Lawrence, who has been a real foul-magnet for Rangers both this season and last. Lawrence was fouled three times during Sunday’s 1-0 success over Hibs at Ibrox.
🩹 Tom Lawrence to be fouled 1+ times
📈 Odds: 1.36
Tom Lawrence has proven to be relatively prolific at earning Rangers free-kicks this season. The attacking midfielder was fouled three times during the Light Blues’ 1-0 win over Hibernian on Sunday.
That means Lawrence has drawn a foul from the opposition in four of his six Scottish Premiership appearances this season. He also regularly found himself on the receiving end of some rough treatment in the Scottish top-flight last term, picking up an average of 1.46 free-kicks per-game.
Lawrence was also fouled once during Rangers’ 1-0 win over Malmo last Thursday, and he looks well placed to do so again on matchday two. Nemanja Matic will be the man most likely trying to keep the Englishman quiet at Ibrox. The Serbian has got on the wrong side of the referee in each of his last four appearances for Lyon.

Level 2 Bet Builder Tip
🏆 Lyon double chance
📈 Odds: 1.44
While Rangers’ record in this competition has to be respected, it’s Lyon who make the most appeal at the prices. As such, the visitors look worth siding with on the double chance. This is far from a vintage Rangers side, evidenced by the fact that they were dumped out of the Champions League qualifiers by Dynamo Kyiv.
They have since been put to the sword in ruthless fashion by Old Firm rivals Celtic, while their 1-0 home win over Hibernian at the weekend left a lot to be desired. It’s also worth pointing out that Rangers have failed to win each of their last two Europa League matches at Ibrox.
While Lyon are hardly pulling up many trees either this season, they do appear to have got their act together in recent weeks. Pierre Sage’s side have picked up seven points from the last 12 on offer in Ligue 1, not to mention they got the better of Greek and Europa Conference League champions Olympiakos on matchday one. They clearly have the superior squad of these two teams and they look well equipped to get out of Glasgow with at least a draw.
🛑 Mohamed Diomande to commit 2+ fouls
📈 Odds: 1.80
Mohamed Diomande has been a serial offender for Rangers this season and he should have plenty of defensive work to get through on Thursday night. The 22-year-old Ivorian was one of two Rangers players to be shown a card against Malmo.
That means Diomande has now been booked in four of his 10 appearances for the Scottish giants this season. He has committed two or more fouls in three of his six Scottish Premiership appearances this term, and he also gave away two free-kicks in Sweden last Thursday.
Diomande could be tasked with trying to shackle Lyon’s Rayan Cherki, who was drawing an average of 1.62 fouls per 90 in Ligue 1 last season. Cherki was fouled once during Lyon’s 2-1 win at Toulouse on Sunday, despite featuring for just 37 minutes as a substitute.
🩹 Malick Fofana to be fouled 2+ times
📈 Odds: 1.83
Malick Fofana is one of the brightest prospects in Europe and he should pose Rangers plenty of problems on Thursday night. The bright young Belgian’s dazzling dribbling skills and explosive bursts forward saw him earn Lyon no fewer than four free-kicks against Olympiakos last Thursday night.
That was just his second start of the season for Lyon, having previously been given a run out from the off against Monaco, a game in which he was fouled once. He has also been fouled in two of his five substitute appearances in Ligue 1 this term, further highlighting his habit for winning his side set pieces.
Expect to see Fofana pit his wits against James Tavernier, who was guilty of two misdemeanours against Malmo on matchday one. The Rangers captain has also committed fouls during his side’s recent contests with both Celtic and Hibernian respectively.
🛑 Ainsley Maitland-Niles to commit 1+ fouls
📈 Odds: 2.0
Ainsley Maitland-Niles is not a player who tends to find himself on the referee’s radar but he looks overpriced to commit a minimum of one foul on Thursday night. He was utilised as a jack of all trades during his time at Arsenal but he tends to be deployed in the right-back role for Lyon. The Englishman was on the bench for Sunday’s 2-1 win at Toulouse but he did commit a foul during Lyon’s last Ligue 1 away-day prior to that at Lens.
It would appear that Maitland-Niles will be in a direct battle with Rangers’ Nedim Bajrami on Thursday night. The Albanian ace bagged the Light Blues’ opening goal against Malmo last week and subsequently went on to be fouled three times during the match. The Lyon defender is also likely to cross paths with Gers left-back Jefte, who has earned his side a free-kick in each of his four Scottish Premiership appearances this season.
