Thursday’s Europa League Accumulator Tips
Dynamo Kiev’s start to this season’s Europa League campaign has been one to forget. With defeats to both Lazio and Hoffenheim already under their belts, their return is no points from six and no goals to show for their efforts either.
A 3-0 home defeat to Lazio was subsequently followed by a 2-0 loss at Hoffenheim and as a consequence, Serhiy Rebrov’s men are second bottom of the 36-team Europa League table before Thursday’s trip to the Italian capital.
A trip that sees them face Roma at the Stadio Olimpico and under new manager Ivan Juric, they have also failed to earn a Europa League win this season. Just a single point from their first two outings – a point that was earned after drawing at home with Athletic Club on Matchday 1.
Roma’s last five games have seen them concede a goal in each which suggests there is still work to be done defensively. However, it makes better reading than the average of 1.4 that Dynamo Kyiv have conceded across their last five and for this reason, we think Roma will edge proceedings.
As we approach Matchday 3 of this season’s Europa League, Tottenham are one of five teams to have picked up a maximum of six points from their first two matches and buoyed by their Premier League win over West Ham at the weekend, they will now look to extend their impressive European start.
With victories against Qarabag and Ferencvaros already notched up, Tottenham now face AZ Alkmaar and with the Dutch outfit having lost 2-0 to Athletic Club on Matchday 2, they failed to build on their previous victory against Elfsborg.
While last weekend also saw AZ slip to defeat against PSV in the Eredivisie and with 11 games played in both league and Europa League group stage competition, Pascal Jansen’s men have conceded a goal per game on average.
An average that Ange Postecoglou and his players will be looking to exploit on Thursday and with the North London outfit not only being roared on by home support but also averaging 2.50 goals per game in this season’s Europa League, they look well placed to make it three European wins from three.
Although there are six fixture rounds of the new Europa League to play, time already seems to be running out as far as Besiktas’ hopes of further progress are concerned. The Turkish outfit currently props up the 35 other teams in the extended league table and does so after successive defeats.
A 4-0 reverse at Ajax on Matchday 1 was swiftly followed up by a 3-1 defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt just a week later and although Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men are having plenty of possession with a Europa League average of 59.2%, they are not making best use of it.
Next up for them is a trip to Lyon on Thursday and whereas Besiktas have made the worst start possible, Lyon have made almost the best. Maximum points for Pierre Sage’s men and they are currently sitting second in the 36-team table before Matchday 3 begins.
A comfortable 2-0 win at home to Olympiacos was soon followed up by a resounding 4-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox and with the joint-second highest scorers in the tournament going up against the worst defence, all signs point to a home win on Thursday.
FC Porto were just seconds away from getting the better of Manchester United in Matchday 2 but would have to settle for a draw. That 3-3 thriller at the Estadio do Dragao meant that the Portuguese outfit had conceded a trio of goals for the second successive game.
The stalemate in Portugal following a 3-2 reverse to Elfsborg and as we approach Matchday 3 of this season’s Europa League, Vitor Bruno’s side currently have the joint-second worst record when it comes to goals conceded.
Thursday sees them play host to a Hoffenheim outfit that although managed to keep a clean sheet against Dynamo Kiev in their last European outing, has also struggled to keep opposition attackers at bay at the start of this Bundesliga season.
Seven league outings have already shipped 17 goals this season and although the average of 2.42 goals against is making life difficult for manager Pellegrino Matarazzo and average of 1.85 goals for should not be overlooked either when it comes to backing both teams to score on Thursday.
Fenerbahce play host to Manchester United on Thursday and coincidentally they have both already played out 1-1 draws with FC Twente in this season’s edition of the Europa League. The former doing so on the road in Matchday 2, the latter in front of their own support on Matchday 1.
Taking those Dutch stalemates out of the equation, the other respective game that both outfits have contested in the competition has seen over 2.5 total goals recorded in each. A 2-1 win over Union Saint-Gilloise for Fenerbahce and a 3-3 draw between Manchester United and Porto.
Taking a look at Fenerbahce’s last six games in all competitions, there have been at least three total goals in three of the six. A 50% hit-rate for the metric in question and the same also applies to United before Thursday.
In terms of Erik ten Hag’s defence in Europe, they have dealt with an average of 10.5 per game but they also generating an average of 24 per game in terms of efforts at the other end. Numbers that suggests they concede and score with almost equal measure and very helpful before Thursday.
