I’m writing this before the Scotland game so there’s a good chance you’ll have seen the score when you’re reading this so delete as applicable: A) YAS SCOTLAND, HOW MUCH ARE FLIGHTS TO QATAR?! Or B) Pish. Please Scotland, just get it done.
Anyway, as a result of the international break we’re without the Premiership this weekend but that doesn’t mean there’s no league action to get stuck into. We’ve got full Championship, League One and League Two cards this weekend. I’ve gone for two selections apiece in the Championship and League One to form this weekend’s acca, so here we go.
Arbroath v Queen of the South
🏆
Scottish Championship
Arbroath show no sign of slowing down and increasingly look like they could be a real player in the Championship title picture this season. A 1-1 draw at Hamilton can be reflected upon as a disappointing result (a sign of how far Dick Campbell has taken Arbroath in itself) but the last minute Tam O’Brien equaliser means they welcome Queens in good spirits.
Arbroath have lost just two league games all season – to Inverness and Raith, both of whom occupy spots in the Play-Offs and are far better than this Queens side – and are smashing the goals in. No side has netted more than Campbell’s team with his 4-4-2 formation allowing for a lot of forwards to be squeezed into the side, with the division’s top scorer Michael McKenna joined by the likes of Joel Nouble, Bobby Linn (usually from the bench) and the lanky Luke Donnelly to comprise what is an adventurous Arbroath line-up.
Queens are struggling and are pretty lucky that those four sides closest to them in the league are pretty dire themselves, otherwise there would be serious issues. Though they earned themselves an admirable draw against Raith last time out, it does mean Queens have failed to win any of their last five Championship games, picking up just two points in that dire run. They’ve lost eight of their 13 league ties this campaign, that record should worsen at a blustery Gayfield on Saturday afternoon.

Prediction: Arbroath to Win
Morton v Kilmarnock
🏆
Scottish Championship
While I mentioned last week that I think Killie could hold onto top spot until the end of the season from here, I did envisage them running away with it, rather than dropping points and relying on results elsewhere. That’s exactly what happened last week and although they probably could’ve had a penalty or two in their 1-0 loss to Partick Thistle a loss was the fair result.
Partick are on completely different level to Morton though and even on their travels, Tommy Wright and his Killie players should be confident of getting back to winning ways. Morton are yet to win at Cappielow on league duties this season, picking up the joint fewest points on home soil alongside basement boys Dunfermline. The division really is beginning to split in two and Morton are very much on the wrong side of the divide and, like Queen of the South, should be seriously worried about retaining their second tier spot. Welcoming this Killie side is unlikely to be the time to alleviate any of those fears too.
Killie have been formidable on their travels this season, going unbeaten in their half dozen jaunts away from Rugby Park. There’s a lot of pressure on an instantaneous return to the Premiership and we’ve seen similar sides struggle to deal with fan pressure on home turf in the second tier in the past (Dundee United, I’m looking at you) which may go some way to illustrate their struggles in Ayrshire this season. But four wins, two draws and just two goals conceded from six away ties means Killie are still top the table. I suspect that record will get even better this weekend and they should have little issue in dispatching of a poor Morton side.

Prediction: Kilmarnock to Win
East Fife v Airdrie
🏆
Scottish League One
What a division League One is for goals betting and these are two of the sides that give the third tier it’s stellar reputation. I’m expecting goals galore at Bayview this weekend as top plays bottom in a game that could be more level than the table suggests.
Though an entire division separates these two, a points difference of just 12 does go a long way to show how tight League One is. Little splits the 10 sides in the standings and they all share a love for goals. Though East Fife are the divisions lowest scoring side, 16 in 13 games is not the reason they’re bottom of the table. They are more than capable of banging a couple in here, though I suspect their comically bad defending will help us out the most on this selection. They’ve shipped a whopping 31 goals already this season meaning their games are averaging just a smidge under four goals per 90. That fantastic record translates well into Over 2.5 Goals betting.
Nine of their 13 games have seen three or more goals scored and I suspect that’ll become double figures when Airdrie roll into town. Airdrie’s Over 2.5 record is the joint-best in the division, with 11 of their 13 ties landing in our needed market. No side currently in the top half has conceded more than them and only Queen’s Park and Cove have notched more than their 23 goals, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull clear of their goal-scoring rivals and really batter a few in against a porous East Fife defence.

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals
Queen’s Park v Clyde
🏆
Scottish League One
The final selection on the acca takes us to the temporary home of Queen’s Park, Firhill, as the Spiders look to get their bid for back-to-back promotions back on track after a little blip. Queen’s Park have dropped points in each of their last three though welcoming a poor Clyde side to Maryhill should mean a return to winning ways isn’t far away.
Draws with East Fife and Cove and a loss to Alloa can all be forgiven for a side and manager coming to terms with a new division. A win against Clyde would mean that it’s been an excellent start to life in the third tier and would mean they’d at least be in the Play-Off spots, if not top of the table, come the conclusion of the first 14 games of the season. They ran away with League Two last campaign and do look very well placed to replicate their promotion this season, especially if they can grab all three points this weekend.
While Queen’s Park look good in spite of a couple of iffy results, Clyde are haemorrhaging points and places in the table. After a decent start they’ve lost four of their last five, scoring just three times in those five games. While David Goodwillie is lethal at this level (he’s scored each of those three goals and 11 of their total 15 League One goals thus far) they have little else and could seriously struggle against a far better Queen’s Park side keen on establishing themselves in the title picture.

Prediction: Queen’s Park to Win
