Portugal’s two biggest sides face off in the Super Cup final in a clash that has been dominated by Sporting in recent seasons - Benfica’s last win over their rivals came back in November 2023. 

🟢 Sporting's Grip on Portuguese Football Waning?

Sporting have gone through a lot of change over the last few seasons, which may threaten their position as Portuguese champions in this coming season after they managed to retain their title last year, despite the mid season departure of Ruben Amorim. Sporting won the 23/24 league title by 10 points, this lead was cut to just two points in the 24/25 campaign and the exit of Gyokeres could be the final nail in the coffin to allow sides like Benfica and Porto back into the title discussion.

Sporting have been fairly active in the transfer window so far, with their latest move being to bring in Luis Suarez from Almeria to help ease the burden of losing Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal. They’ve also strengthened in midfield and in goal, those additions would do well to help Sporting maintain the gap between themselves and their Liga Portugal rivals.

🔴 Benfica Need to End Seven-Game Struggle

Benfica may be the most successful club in Portugal’s history, but they have been forced to play second fiddle to Sporting over the last few seasons - finishing 2nd in each of the last two campaigns. They haven’t even managed to beat Sporting since November 2023, with Sporting managing to avoid defeat against their rivals in the seven meetings since. 

Benfica can lay down a marker here, Sporting are probably at the weakest they’ve been in recent years. Benfica have been adding to their squad in the transfer window with signings like Richard Rios, Enzo Barrenechea and Amar Dedic.

Benfica failed to win any of the four meetings between the sides last season, Sporting came out on top on two occasions, while the other two meetings ended in 1-1 draws.
