This season’s G1 St Leger Stakes has an open look to it, with six entries at single figures in the betting currently. Aidan O’Brien has won this prestigious prize three times in the previous seven years, including with Continuous in 2023.
Four out of those single-figure entrants are trained by the master handler. G1 Irish Derby winner Los Angeles is towards the top of the betting, following a gutsy success in the G2 Voltigeur Stakes at York recently. He may have booked himself a ticket for the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, with that victory, however.
Stablemate, Illinois, was a neck behind Los Angeles at York and is likely to run at Doncaster for this final classic of the season. He won the G2 Queen’s Vase at Ascot over 1m6f so is guaranteed to stay this distance. He is a worthy favourite but another of the O’Brien contingent is the best selection – courtesy of JAN BRUEGHEL.
A classy son of Galileo, Jan Brueghel is undefeated in three starts, culminating in a determined Group Two victory at Goodwood last time. Ryan Moore reported that he was still green during the race and could have further improvement to come, especially stepping up in journey. He is a brother to 2m5f flat winner Dawn Rising and to Group One winner Sovereign, which offers the prospect of progress over this stamina-sapping test.

SUNWAY appeals as the next best alternative for trainer David Menuisier. The Galiway colt and Group 1-winning juvenile has had a productive three-year-old campaign, which included a second in the G1 Irish Derby. Despite being a well-beaten fourth in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last time, he could show more racing over a longer trip.
Outpaced when it mattered most at the Berkshire venue, he may have the requisite credentials at the extended 1m6f trip, especially if the ground is on the soft side.

ANCIENT WISDOM has been earmarked as a potential St Leger candidate since winning the G3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes at Newmarket over 1m5f. The Godolphin-owned son of Dubawi clearly relished the rise in distance that day and would certainly be dangerous to dismiss, if allowed an easy lead.
A Group One winner at two, he is already a course scorer and could find further progress on this galloping track. He is another who would massively benefit from any rain falling at the Yorkshire venue and rates a big each-way option for his powerful trainer.
