I’m very confident that we won’t get this price for much longer on Jamal Musiala. Anything over 2.0 is very generous for Musiala to win a few fouls when looking over his record this season and in previous campaigns.
Musiala’s season has been disrupted by injury, but he has been getting into the starting lineup of late with his two starts this term coming within Bayern Munich’s last five Bundesliga matches. Musiala has won 13 fouls across just 326 minutes of action in the Bundesliga this season (3.59 per 90).
This is obviously quite a small sample size, but this is a strong part of Musiala’s game - he won 55 fouls across 21 starts in the Bundesliga last season (2.74 per 90), and was fouled three times in his most recent Bundesliga start as Bayern came away 4-1 winners over Mochengladbach.
St Pauli are not an overly aggressive side, averaging 10.0 fouls committed per game in the Bundesliga this season, but do crucially tend to pack the midfield which should give Musiala a variety of opponents to draw a few fouls from here. St Pauli lined up with a midfield three when these sides met earlier in the season, with that trio combining to commit three fouls as Bayern came away 3-1 winners over St Pauli.
This selection is clear value when you compare it to Musiala’s usual price to win a few fouls. He’s usually around 1.4 or 1.5 to draw 2+ fouls, so the 2.20 we’re getting here is a great price given his record this season and over previous campaigns.
