Atlético Tucumán v Newell’s Old Boys
🏟
Sunday 31st July –00:30AM KO
We are first looking at a match with the surprise leaders in it; Atlético Tucumán. It is incredible how Tucumán went in three months from an awful side trying to avoid relegation to the top of the league after ten rounds. Manager Lucas Pusineri managed to build an unbeatable defence and that has been enough to go on a run of five victories in a row.
He didn’t get new players for that but put Matias Orihuela in at right back and Manuel Capasso in at centre back. The two players, 30 and 26 years old, spent most of their career at the lower levels, but have been spot on in this league and with Bolivian national team goalie Carlos Lampe behind them, they added some quality and experience to the side.
Newell’s Old Boys were top of the league for a while, but dropped back lately and even lost the heated derby against a struggling Rosario Central. Their defence is generally steady, but they can barely find the goal. That is something they share with Tucumán, because just like Pusineri’s side, they only scored ten goals in ten games. At Tucumán, Ramiro Ruiz Rodríguez and Augusto Lotti are the two strikers who do just about enough, because with four goals between the two, they are not the deadly couple up front.
Newell’s are still without goalkeeper Ramiro Macagno and captain and left back Leonel Vangioni, because of injuries. However, the real problem is going forward, because striker Juan Garcia only scored in the opening match of the season, despite starting every game. That’s why this match has got unders written all over it.

Lanús v Aldosivi
🏟
Sunday 31st July – 5:00PM KO
Lanús and Aldosivi are bottom and next to the bottom of the Argentinian Liga Profesional at the moment and with 28 teams that’s not great. From Aldosivi that was more or less expected, as they are one of the teams with the lowest budgets in the league and had loads of problems at the start of the season. Manager Martin Palermo left at the brink of the season start and striker Martin Cauteruccio, is aiming for a move away. He returned to the side last week and worked hard, but couldn’t really do much against River Plate.
Aldosivi appointed Leandro Somoza as replacement for Palermo, but the inexperienced manager hasn’t really been able to do much with the side. His only feat has been a victory over the club who’d sacked him two weeks before that, Rosario Central. Lanús got rid of manager Jorge Almirón and that was long overdue. The side was pretty rubbish last season and didn’t look like they could do much this year. Lanús thought they’d change things around with the inexperienced interim Lautaro Acosta, but three defeats later they signed Frank Kudelka this week and that seems a better choice.
Kudelka almost brought Huracán to the play-offs last season. A poor start to the season cost him his job there, but Lanús almost immediately signed him and he has got a decent track record in Argentinian football. Whether he can turn things around immediately is hard to say, but a home game against a weak Aldosivi may be the perfect start for any new manager, that’s why I’d go on a home victory.

River Plate v Club Sarmiento
🏟
Monday 1st August – 00:30AM KO
River are getting back to their usual level. With two victories in a row they climbed up to the top half of the table and even though they are seven points from the top, they are still a serious title contender. They lost Julian Álvarez to Manchester City on the first of July and it took the club a while to get the necessary replacements, but that seems sorted now. With Lucas Beltrán en Miguel Borja they have two quality strikers and that showed last match. After a rocky start with lots of chances but no goals, they beat Aldosivi in the second half with three goals in five minutes.
Club Sarmiento are fighting relegation and the club started the season relatively well. But recently that’s changed, with defeats at the hands of Tucumán and Colón de Santa Fe. In that last game against Colón, they had plenty of chances, but they couldn’t keep the points in Junín. Against River they will surely not go all out attacking. They tried that last time they met in June and a 7-0 beating was the result.
Nevertheless, they aren’t a side that are very good at defending, so they’ll probably come forward a bit and River will probably know how to deal with that. At the moment, Beltrán is the starting striker and Borja comes in to finish it off, and I don’t think Sarmiento will be able to contain that. As Sarmiento are better going forward than hanging back, I see a match with lots of chances and probably goals coming up.
