St. Gallen v Lugano
🏟
Sunday 24th April – 1:15PM KO
It will be a dress rehearsal at kybunpark for St. Gallen and Lugano this weekend. These two will meet again in just under a month for the 2022 Swiss Cup Final in Bern, but for now all eyes are on crucial points in the race for third place and European football next season.
St. Gallen suffered their first setback in four months last time out as they threw away a lead in the final minutes to lose at Luzern. The result brought an end to their eleven-match unbeaten streak and put a dent in their late dash for Europe too. Spirits were lifted in midweek though, putting on a professional display on Thursday to eliminate second-tier Yverdon to reach the Swiss Cup Final for a second consecutive season.
Lugano eventually got over the line themselves in midweek, they gave up goals in the final minutes of both regulation and extra-time before winning the penalty shootout against Luzern to take themselves to the showpiece event. It provided a much-needed boost after two heavy defeats to sides in the bottom four over the past two weeks in the league.
I expect that FCSG will get over that blip against Luzern and pick up the points here. Lugano have went off the boil recently, conceding nine goals in their last three games against sides in
the bottom half, and were shaky again in the cup semi-final. FCSG ran out comfortable winners at the Cornaredo in February and with their firepower, no side has scored more than they have in the last ten games, they should come out victorious again.

FC Basel v Luzern
🏟
Sunday 24th April – 3:30PM KO
FC Basel are unbeaten in their last seven league matches after their draw at Sion last weekend. That 0-0 at the Tourbillon also marked their third drawn match in a row and they’ll be keen to return to winning ways with the visit of Luzern to St. Jakob-Park. The point that they did gain in the Valais was enough to move FCB a further point ahead of Young Boys, stretching their advantage in second place to six points with just six games remaining.
After an energy-sapping and ultimately disappointing Swiss Cup semi-final extra-time defeat to Lugano in midweek, Luzern will need to get back on their feet quickly with time running out to save themselves at the bottom. They were impressive in their last league game, an enthralling 3-2 home victory over St. Gallen that brought two goals in the last six minutes to secure the victory, but away form continues to be a real issue. FCL have won only one of fifteen on the road this season.
While FCB haven’t won for a few games, their performances have been generally good over the last couple of months, and I expect them to get back to winning ways back at the Joggeli. They have also conceded the least amount of goals amongst anyone at home and are coming up against a team that has only scored nineteen. Taking that into consideration, alongside their exertions from midweek and their poor away form, I’d back Basel to get the job done for a third time this season against FCL.

Grasshoppers v Lausanne
🏟
Sunday 24th April – 3:30PM KO
It is a relegation clash at the Letzigrund that will prove to be a defining day for at least one of Grasshoppers or Lausanne. A win for the home side would not only maintain their lead but also possibly eliminate any remaining threat from play-off occupying Luzern. LS simply must win to try and reduce the seven-point gap between themselves in the automatic relegation position and Luzern above.
GC may have just refound their form at exactly the right time. An early penalty was enough to decide their trip to Geneva last weekend, Leo Bonatini scoring after just four minutes to bring an end to a nine-match winless run. If they can win in two consecutive games for only the second time this season, they will be confident they have done enough to stay out of the relegation mire in the final matches, something that looked very unlikely just a few weeks ago.
Lausanne seem to have suddenly realised they are in grave danger. After thirteen games without a win, a run that included eleven defeats, they have drawn at Young Boys and recorded 4-1 victories over both Servette and Lugano. Talented youngster Zeki Amdouni has scored six goals in those games and it is little wonder that Switzerland, Turkey and Tunisia are all trying to woo him on the international scene.
With so much at stake, this is a game that neither will want to lose, but also can’t afford to draw either. GC’s last seven in a row at the Letzi have ended with both teams scoring and the last five in the Super League for LS have too. I think we’ll see that again with both teams going for it in their fight for survival.
