Leeds had the upper hand in this head-to-head matchup last season when both sides were in the Championship, but the Black Cats have come on leaps and bounds since then. Sunderland currently sit 6th in the Premier League, eight points and 10 league positions better off than their weekend opponents, and they will hope to maintain their impressive form at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.

📈 Sunderland v Leeds Form & Tactics

Sunderland will have fond memories of their last outing at the Stadium of Light, as they beat bitter rivals Newcastle by a 1-0 scoreline. It might not have been the most entertaining encounter, with just 11 shots and 0.54 xG created in the entire game, but the Black Cats were able to capitalise on Nick Woltemade’s horror own goal. That win kept Sunderland’s home record intact - meaning Arsenal are the only other side to currently be unbeaten on home turf in the Premier League this season. Only the Gunners, Man City and Aston Villa have been more effective than Sunderland in picking up points on home turf this season, which has been a key reason for their success so far.

There are quite a few parallels to be drawn between Sunderland and Leeds this season, as Daniel Farke’s men have also been strong on home turf. While they haven’t been anywhere near as strong on their travels, Leeds do come into this clash in a rich vein of form, with two wins and two draws in their last four matches, which has created a bit of daylight between them and the relegation spots. Since shifting to a back three, Leeds have gone from strength to strength, and will hope to maintain their strong run.

📔 Sunderland v Leeds Formation & Team News

Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk have featured in the defensive trio in recent weeks, with Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson providing width as wing backs. With no fresh injury doubts, Daniel Farke could opt for a similar XI to that which beat Crystal Palace 4-1 last time out, but Ilia Gruev will hope to reclaim his starting spot in midfield over Brenden Aaronson.

With so many players unavailable, predicting Sunderland’s setup becomes a lot tougher. Brian Brobbey has scored some important goals this season, but is likely to drop out of the starting XI for Wilson Isidor here. Chris Rigg and Simon Adingra have been reintroduced to play out wide, while Geertruida should partner Xhaka in midfield once again. Le Bris is likely to go with a back four, with Trai Hume deputising at left back in place of Reinildo, while a centre back partnership of Omar Alderete and Dan Ballard will aim to make it three successive clean sheets for the Black Cats.
