Both Spurs and Newcastle will be determined to muster a response following unexpected midweek defeats when the top-four chasers meet to contest what should be an intriguing skirmish in North London this afternoon.
Some kamikaze defending scuppered Spurs’ chances in their 2-1 reverse at home to London rivals West Ham on Wednesday evening and their throwaway defeat pushed their winless run in the Premier League to a concerning five matches.
The Toon’s away-day woes meanwhile, were evident again when they were swept aside by a rampant-looking Everton in a 3-0 loss at Goodison Park. The Magpies have now failed to win six of their seven away assignments this term and they will need to shake off their travel sickness to progress.
United managed to complete the league double over Tottenham last season, though the Magpies’ brittleness on the road this term could allow Spurs to exact some revenge in what could be an incident-packed tie.

⚽ Match stats: Can Tottenham harness home advantage?
Spurs hadn’t lost three home games in a row since the club’s dismal Jacques Santini era in 2004, though their defeat to West Ham on Wednesday means Spurs have now matched that dismal feat from almost two decades ago following a trio of setbacks in North London.
However, to their credit, Ange Postecoglou’s side dominated 75% of the ball and racked up 23 attempts against the Irons on an evening where they were worth at least a point and a similar performance against Newcastle might earn them the rewards they deserve.
Remarkably, Newcastle’s eye-catching 8-0 win at Sheffield United in late September remains their only Premier League away win of the campaign so far, a record that suggests United struggle to perform when they aren’t backed by a passionate St. James’ Park atmosphere.
In addition, their drab showing at Everton in midweek had all the hallmarks of a team suffering from the rigours of fatigue. The Magpies’ injury crisis has been well-documented and on Wednesday, they fielded the same XI for the fourth fixture in a row with the nine substitutions made by Eddie Howe in those contests all coming in the 80th minute or later.
A jaded Toon side could find it difficult to combat Spurs’ high-energy style under Ange Postecoglou and brave bettors might favour backing a home win as a result. However, the host’s own form calls for caution in the markets, so a stake on Spurs double chance might be the smarter option.
Predictions:
🏆 Tottenham double chance @ 1.33
🏆 Tottenham to win @ 2.10
🎯 Shooting stats: Wingers are worth watching in North London
Spurs threatened down both flanks on Wednesday against West Ham and their flanksmen, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski, could be chief antagonists again when Spurs try to stretch the pitch against Newcastle.
The Magpies’ Kieran Trippier had an error-ridden game against Everton in midweek and there seems to be some slowness in those 33-year-old legs following a busy few weeks. This could allow Richarlison, desperately in need of a goal for his confidence, the opportunity to make that happen.
The Brazilian has taken 5, 4, 3 and 1 shot in his last four league starts, netting three shots on target, and can be backed to at least test Dubravka at 1.53.
With Trippier struggling, Livramento will be forced to get upfield even more, potentially opening space for Dejan Kulusevski down Spurs’ right-flank.
The Swede was restored to his favoured position on the right against West Ham and he responded by getting a shot on target for the fourth time in five Premier League appearances.
For the Magpies, counter-attacking specialist Anthony Gordon stands out as an option with the potential to hit at least one accurate attempt at 1.73. The willing runner has landed a shot on target in each of his last five Premier League appearances and his movement could trouble Spurs’ high defensive line.
Predictions:
🎯 Richarlison to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.53
🎯 Dejan Kulusevski to have 1+ shots on target @ 2.00
🎯 Anthony Gordon to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.73
🚩 Corners stats: Siding with Spurs makes sense
Only Man Utd’s Premier League fixtures have seen more corner kicks than Tottenham’s so far this season, and Spurs’ midweek bout with West Ham featured another 12 of those particular set pieces, with the hosts clocking eight of them themselves.
Spurs’ league games have been averaging 12.13 corners per 90 minutes since August while Tottenham rank fifth in the league for total corners won on home soil (52). In stark contrast, Newcastle sit third-last in the division for corners won on the road and they added just two to their meagre tally at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
Spurs meanwhile, racked up eight corners in their loss to West Ham the same evening and the statistical evidence coupled with Newcastle’s away-day troubles makes the Lilywhites considerably more attractive in the corner match bet market at 1.83.
The high overall average corner count from Spurs’ home matches this season – aided by the end-to-end nature of the Londoners matches – can be leaned upon again by including over 9.5 corners in your bet builder for today.
Postecoglou’s sides’ last two home tests alone featured a sky-high 24 corner kicks and a 9.5 corner threshold seems like a modest target to beat in comparison.
Predictions:
🚩 Over 9.5 match corners @ 1.50
🚩 Tottenham corner match bet @ 1.83
🟨 Cards stats: Tottenham’s aggressive streak to be evident again
With Spurs’ chaotic playing style under Ange Postecoglou sparking aggressive pressing from the front and plenty of last-ditch tackling at the back, Spurs home games have been a fertile hunting ground for card bettors this season.
Another six cautions were brandished when West Ham crossed the capital to visit Tottenham’s high-tech stadium in midweek and the hosts’ home fixtures have been averaging a bone-crunching 7.14 cards per 90 minutes overall this season.
You’d have to expect more of the same when keen card collectors Newcastle visit London. The Magpies sit just below Spurs on the list of Premier League clubs carrying the most cautions this season and with notoriously card-happy referee Chris Kavanagh officiating (16 cards in last three games), the flash of yellow should be prevalent again.
Alongside backing over 4.5 total cards to land at 1.70, including Spurs from the over 1.5 home cards market is a favoured approach. Postecoglou’s side have picked up a minimum of two cards in five of their seven fixtures at home this season and at least three cards in four of the same matches.
Predictions:
🟨 Over 4.5 cards @ 1.70
🟨 Over 1.5 Tottenham cards @ 1.29
