Scottie Scheffler Top 5 Finish:

Scottie Scheffler is the overwhelming favourite for the US Open after a stunning run which includes three wins in his last four starts. Victory at last month’s PGA Championship was followed by a commanding win at the Memorial on his last start.

Scheffler is no bigger than 11/4 for outright glory but preference is to combine him in a top finish treble. The world number one has finished tied fourth or better in five of his last six starts. Scheffler looks hard to keep out of the frame and another top five finish is a confident selection.

Ben Griffin Top 10 Finish:

Ben Griffin was Scheffler’s closest challenger at Muirfield Village and the confident American is backed to maintain his exceptional form at Oakmont. Griffin was without a PGA Tour victory heading into the spring but pairs success at the Zurich Classic in April has sparked a spectacular run.

He finished tied eighth at the PGA Championship before landing his maiden individual title at Colonial last month. Second place at the Memorial was his seventh top 10 of a remarkable season. Griffin can ride the momentum with another top 10 at the US Open.

Shane Lowry Top 20 Finish:

Shane Lowry came agonisingly close to winning the US Open at Oakmont in 2016 and he is fancied to produce another strong performance in Pennsylvania. Lowry took a four-shot lead into the final round nine years ago but a tough Sunday resulted in a tie for second with Dustin Johnson surging to victory.

The 2019 Open champion has finished inside the top 20 of the last two US Opens and has been consistently impressive this year. With eight top 20s on the PGA Tour already this season, Lowry is backed to deliver another solid showing to complete this boosted treble.

The US Open provides one of the toughest examinations of the year and the world’s best golfers will face a brutal test at Oakmont. The 7,372-yard par 70 should play firm and fast, with a dry and warm forecast for most of the week, with the ultra-quick Poa Annua greens providing a devilish challenge for the field.

Anyone straying from the fairways will be in a world of trouble with deep rough swallowing up errant drives. Long driving will be a significant asset around Oakmont and hitting plenty of greens in regulation will be key with bogeys or worse lurking throughout the Pennsylvania course.

Our golf expert is here with their three favourite outright picks for the Championship, as well as a boosted treble made up of a Top 5, Top 10, and Top 20 selection.

Bryson Dechambeau defends the title this week and there looks every chance he can threaten back-to-back US Open victories. DeChambeau is going for a hat-trick in this major after success last year at Pinehurst backed up his triumph at Winged Foot in 2020. He proved his talent for the most demanding test at Oakmont as a 22-year-old in 2016 with a tie for 15th only two months after turning pro.

Dechambeau is driving the ball phenomenally with huge distance and relative accuracy considering his power. His short game and putting is also mightily impressive and the 31-year-old has finished joint fifth at the Masters and tied second at last month’s PGA Championship. He is seemingly a contender at every stateside major with five successive top sixes in the US-based tournaments, stretching back to last year’s Masters. With a victory last month at LIV South Korea, DeChambeau has the confidence and form to hang tough at Oakmont and contend at 15/2.

Jon Rahm is another player with positive memories from the last time Oakmont hosted a major nine years ago. The Spaniard teed up as a 21-year-old at the famed course and finished as low amateur in 23rd position. Rahm’s major breakthrough came at the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines, he was third in 2019 at Pebble Beach and 10th last year.

Two-time major champion Rahm appears to have his hunger back to add to his success in the game’s biggest events. He has been exceptionally consistent on LIV with no worse than ninth this season. Rahm got into contention during the final round last month at Quail Hollow in the PGA Championship and only a tough finish resulted in him dropping down to eighth. With this performance fresh in the memory, Rahm can mount a strong challenge for a second US Open triumph at 12/1.

Harris English is the most appealing bet at a bigger price with the dogged American a proven performer in the toughest tournaments. English, who won earlier this year at Torrey Pines, produced his best result at a major last month with a tie for second at the PGA Championship. This is a huge boost heading to Oakmont and he played well at another tough course on his last start, with 12th place at Muirfield Village.

English has won five times on the PGA Tour and relishes grinding out scores on demanding tracks. His record at the US Open backs this up with three top 10s, including third in 2021 and fourth a year earlier. He has never missed a cut in nine appearances at this major and there is no doubt he thrives on battling for par under the most gruelling conditions. English has been well backed in recent weeks but still stands out at appealing each-way odds of 70/1 for Oakmont.
