📈 Wales v Bosnia & Herzegovina Form & Tactics

Wales are rightly favourites for this clash, I’ve been very impressed with the improvements that Craig Bellamy has made to the national team set up. He clearly understands the intangibles that come with managing a national side, and has got Wales playing some very exciting football on the international stage - which is not an easy feat with how the schedule is structured.

Wales’ form at home has been particularly strong under Bellamy, winning three of their four home matches during qualifying and netting 15 goals in the process (3.75 per game). That data is slightly skewed by Wales netting seven goals against North Macedonia in their final qualifying game, but that does further reinforce just how many goals are now in this Wales side.

Bosnia & Herzegovina are one of the more awkward sides left in this qualifying process, and will push on with quite an aggressive and bitty approach to reach the next round. Bosnia committed more fouls than any other country during the European Qualifying process, hinting at their wider strategy and structure.

Bosnia finished second to Austria in their qualifying group, and weren’t actually favourites to come through, with Bosnia managing to beat out Romania as their main threat to finish second. They did manage to score 17 goals across their eight qualifying matches, so it won't just be Wales doing the probing in this clash with Bosnia also well aware that this is a straight shootout for a spot in the final round.

📔 Wales v Bosnia & Herzegovina Formation & Team News

Wales should be quite bold in this contest and look to cause Bosnia problems as early as they can so the game opens up a bit. Early goals have been a bit of a feature of Craig Bellamy’s time in charge of Wales, especially at home, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a fast start from the home nation here.

Wales may line up with Harry Wilson leading the line, Bellamy has experimented with different forward options during the qualifying process with Wales not having a clear number nine that is suitable for the level. Brennan Johnson has also played in this role, though Wales may find it less effective to play with a false nine here, as Bosnia may opt for a back three - which would limit the space they have to run in behind.

Bosnia switched between a 3-5-2 and a 4-4-2 during the qualifying process, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them shift between the two shapes throughout this game depending on how it is unfolding. I don’t think they’ll be as bold as Wales, but will be aware that if they get the first goal then they can make this a very awkward assignment for Wales with how stubborn they can be.
