It is a new era at West Brom as they put their faith in another young head coach, Eric Ramsay.
Under Ryan Mason, West Brom have flattered to deceive, but under the lights at The Hawthorns, there should be a charged atmosphere to welcome second-placed Middlesbrough, who are now fully focused on promotion under Kim Hellberg.

📈 West Brom v Middlesbrough & Tactics
It goes without saying that West Brom haven't been in the best form; that's why they have dismissed Ryan Mason after giving him all of the verbal support one would expect of a supposedly long-term summer appointment. However, it is primarily the away form that has dragged West Brom down.
They have now lost 10 away matches in a row in the league, which is a club record number. I do find this interesting because actually they are only running a -0.2 xG differential across away matches as a whole in the league, and they have generated over 1 xG in their last six away matches too.
Home is a very different story, though. Baggies have lost only twice at home all season, and operate a very impressive +0.9 xG differential across those home fixtures too, so this was already going to be a difficult fixture for Middlesbrough regardless of the removal of Mason. Ramsay potentially having greater support from the stands and a shedding of the previous trappings of the Mason era only contribute to that difficulty.
Middlesbrough turned around their frankly ridiculous variance issues in front of goal last time out in the league by thrashing Southampton 4-0 at the Riverside. This brought to an end a run of four matches without scoring, but as mentioned above, they continued to create chances throughout this run as well. Hellberg plays a fairly open game, but he has continued a fairly steady +0.4 xG per match differential over his time in charge so far.
Indeed, Boro have won the xG battle in all of Kim Hellberg’s away matches in the Championship; the only away match they have lost on that metric was in the FA Cup to Premier League Fulham last week. Only twice in 11 matches have Boro failed to generate over 1 xG as well, and even then, those totals were 0.93 and 0.83, so Boro are likely to score in the majority of matches that they play.
📔 West Brom v Middlesbrough Formation & Team News
West Brom have been playing a 4-2-3-1 shape in most matches under Ryan Mason. This could change under Eric Ramsay, at Minnesota, over 90% of Ramsay's matches in charge last season saw them play with a back three/five. However, that does often take some time to coach, and also the personnel need to be in the squad for it to work as well.
Nat Phillips is expected to return to the Baggies back line here, but Ousmane Diakite is missing through compassionate leave. Two of West Brom’s best attackers, Karlan Grant and Aune Heggebo, are also both likely to return to the team here after being rested for the FA Cup.
Middlesbrough have added to their squad since last weekend, with Leo Castledine and Fin Munroe both joining the club. However, I wouldn’t expect either to be thrust into the starting XI here at this stage. Sam Silvera is likely to retain his place with Delano Burgzorg, also supporting Tommy Conway. Hackney and Aidan Morris will continue their superb central midfield partnership, whilst Adilson Malanda is expected to continue in central defence with Dael Fry.
