Adidas is set to introduce the Trionda, the official match ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The name Trionda appears to be inspired by the Spanish word 'onda' (wave) and the prefix 'tri', symbolising the three host nations: the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Built with next-generation Connected Ball Technology, the Trionda contains a motion sensor that transmits real-time positional data to assist VAR officials during offside and handball reviews.
While reports have mentioned an “AI-enhanced” match ball for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the ball itself does not track offside positions.
Instead, its built-in motion sensor provides precise ball-contact data that, when combined with semi-automated offside technology using multiple camera feeds, helps VAR officials determine offside decisions more quickly.
The data integrates with AI-driven tracking systems to improve decision accuracy - similar to the technology first introduced at Qatar 2022, now enhanced for faster analysis.
The design reportedly features white, red, blue, and green panels representing the host nations, and its aerodynamic structure aims to deliver a more stable flight trajectory than previous World Cup balls.
Adidas has teased early promotional imagery featuring Lionel Messi, Jude Bellingham, and Lamine Yamal.
