Midweek Premiership action baby! While it’s more than a little disappointing none of the six Premiership games are televised (or any of the Tuesday Championship games either) I won’t let that dampen my spirits ahead of what looks a lovely set of matches in the top flight of Scottish football. I’ve had a look at all six ties and have found a Scottish Treble I really like the look of, but let me know your thoughts after having a read of my research.
Hibernian v Celtic

Scottish Premiership
Celtic haven’t actually won in the league at Easter Road since 2014, a run stretching seven games but I think they should be able to shake that hoodoo this week. They’re starting to really click into gear as a team, whereas Jack Ross’ Hibs are beginning to slip down the table after an impressive start to the new campaign.
Consecutive defeats to Aberdeen, Dundee United and Rangers have begun to get certain areas of the media and Hibs fanbase questioning Ross’ methods. It’s far too early to be calling for his head but a fourth defeat in a row wouldn’t do him much favours, even if it is against a Celtic side who look a more coherent team as the games tick by. But Ross does have history on his side, five of the last seven Easter Road Premiership ties between these two have ended in draws with the men from the capital coming out on top in the other two. A continuation of this sequence would at least stop the rot somewhat for Ross, who will be very disappointed to see both Dundee United and Hearts with daylight ahead of them in the table, as well as the more fancied Rangers and Celtic.
Just as Hibs will be irked to see their city rivals with breathing room ahead of them in the standings, Ange Postecoglou will be keen to keep ramping up the pressure on Rangers, who sit four points and three spots above his side. While the attacking talent of the likes of Jota, Kyogo Furuhashi and, now, Georgios Giakoumakis have come to the fore of late, the Celtic backline has looked ever more solid too. They should be able to keep out Hibs in this one, especially if the hosts play anything like they have over their run of three loses – they registered just four shots on target in the three consecutive games they failed to win. They’ll need to rediscover their early season form if they’re to have a chance here, but I can’t see past a Celtic win.

Livingston v Dundee United

Scottish Premiership
Yorke and Cole. Henry and Bergkamp. Edwards and Mulgrew. Just some of the best strike partnerships to have graced the game of football, though one of them is not like the other. The two Dundee United defenders took their partnership to new levels at the weekend too. Not content with just being the most solid unit in the Premiership, they followed Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son’s lead and ‘returned the favour’, assisting each other’s goals in the 2-1 win over Motherwell that shifted United up to third, just three points off top spot.
They’ve looked formidable at the heart of the United defence, as I touched on as part of last weekend’s acca write-up, and they do provide Tam Courts’ side with a real platform to build on. The midfield is packed with quality too, as Jeando Fuchs, Dylan Levitt and Ian Harkes look to be following in their centre halves’ path and forming quite the bond. They’re still not quite consistent goal scorers and have only outscored three sides in the division despite their lofty position. Courts won’t be too worried about their relative lack of goals with the results continuing to flow. They’ve only been beaten twice in the league this season, taking four points from the Glasgow giants and do look as if they may have the staying power to make a good fist of a top six finish. I do worry they may not be able to maintain their current position but after a season of dire football under Mickey Mellon in which survival was largely down to there being worse teams below them rather than anything United did themselves, a top six finish would be a great achievement.
Livi find themselves in decent nick too, with back-to-back wins over fellow strugglers Ross County and St. Johnstone alleviating some of the pressure on them and kicking them on in the standings. Both of the wins, surprisingly, came on the road, or to be more precise, grass. Their plastic pitch has been the bedrock of their success since their return to the top flight but they’ve only amassed three points from the four games on home ‘soil’ this season (all of which came in the win over Celtic, too). I can’t imagine this will be a game for the neutral so if you are looking at which game to shell out for and watch on a club’s in-house channel, I wouldn’t be recommending this one first but I do expect United to once again avoid defeat.

Prediction: Dundee United to Win or Draw
Motherwell v St. Mirren

Scottish Premiership
Sixth places seventh in what is surely a grudge match to see which of Motherwell and St. Mirren will find themselves in the top six after the first round of Premiership fixtures have been completed. The two head into this one in different runs of form too so it will be interesting to see if the positivity of St Mirren and the negativity of Motherwell play a part in this one.
After a run of four wins and a draw in five, a three game losing streak has cooled Motherwell’s fans’ optimism over Graham Alexander and his side. I don’t want to say ‘I told you so’ (okay, I do a little) but I wasn’t too hot on the Steelmen at all this season. It’s true that Tony Watt is in incredible form and they’ve not been beaten by mugs over their last three but I’m still not convinced by Motherwell at all. They laboured through their League Cup group before a limp exit at Dens at the next stage and their four Premiership wins have all come against sides currently in the bottom five. This will be a good test for where they really are, but I’d be amazed if they make light work of St. Mirren.
I’m a big Jim Goodwin fan and won’t be surprised to see him linked to some big jobs in the future but before he’s replacing Koeman or Solskjaer he must deal with Motherwell at Fir Park. Their narrow defeat to Rangers on Sunday was their first defeat in seven games and only their third of the Premiership season (the other two coming at the hands of Hearts and Celtic). The front three of Jamie McGrath, Connor Ronan and Eammon Brophy looks effective and capable of bothering this Well backline, I just think that a hard-fought and ultimately unsuccessful battle with Rangers on Sunday will play its part in St. Mirren just failing to get all three points in this one though goals should be of little issue between two fairly evenly matched sides.
