With the potential of a very high-intensity matchup, and keeping extra time in mind, substitutions may prove the ultimate difference on Sunday night, giving more players the opportunity to shine when it matters most.
Who are some of the players that punters should be looking out for coming off the bench to make an impact in Sunday’s final? Here are the top players to watch.
🔄️ Best Players for Super Sub
🇪🇸 Alvaro Morata: Anytime Goalscorer @ 3.50 – 🔄️ for Mikel Oyarzabal or Joselu
The Spanish forward is perhaps not the most prolific, especially not at the very highest level, which makes him a potentially good value Super Sub candidate for the goals and shot market.
Morata has been substituted in each of the matches that he has started at the Euros, always between 60 and 80 minutes, so it does give the substitute that is coming on a chance at getting on the scoresheet or getting shots away at least.
It has been very clear in the knockout stages that Luis de la Fuentes has given Morata the instruction to go all out for as long as he can in terms of effort, against France in particular he was charging around off the ball to make an impact, in the knowledge that he will likely be replaced when he has run out of energy.
In terms of potential replacements and who may capitalise on Morata’s missed chances, Mikel Oyarzabal is the usual man summoned from the bench to play the central role. He replaced Morata in the two warm-up friendlies against Andorra, in which he scored a hat-trick, and Northern Ireland, where both Morata and Oyarzabal bagged.
Mikel Merino and Dani Olmo have scored for Spain when emerging from the bench in this tournament, Oyarzabal is a livewire who could do something similar, but also Joselu is an option from the bench, a role he has played to perfection for Real Madrid this season as well.
🏴 Harry Kane: Anytime Goalscorer @ 3.30 / Score or Assist @ 2.80 – 🔄️ for Ollie Watkins or Ivan Toney
The talisman and captain of England has not been invulnerable to being substituted by Gareth Southgate of late.
In truth, the great centre forward could well be carrying some physical ailment that prevents him from playing at 100% for the full match, but his effectiveness in most areas of open play is clearly lacking.
Kane has notched three times in the competition, so he has contributed, but his replacements, when they have been introduced, have been pretty effective themselves.
Gareth Southgate has rotated his options from the bench according to the situation. The most obvious impactful change was in the semi-final when Ollie Watkins was introduced from the bench and scored the winner in the last second of the regulation 90 minutes. However, Ivan Toney is also a player who can certainly provide something late on in the game as well, so if Kane doesn’t hit the scoresheet then perhaps one of his replacements can.
Toney provided an assist for Kane in extra time against Slovakia in the first knockout round, and whilst that wouldn’t obviously help for the Super Sub promotion here, it does show that Toney can provide something for England. Ollie Watkins did win the Premier League Playmaker of the Year award in 23/24 with 13 assists as well, so perhaps taking the score or assist market for Kane could well be the better option.
🏴 Phil Foden: Score or Assist @ 3.60 – 🔄️ for Cole Palmer
The current Premier League player of the year hasn’t yet produced a goal contribution in the European Championship.
However, he couldn’t have come much closer to providing a goal for England in the semi-final with an attempt stopped on the line by Denzel Dumfries and a great effort from outside the area that clipped the post as well, he seems to be getting closer.
When Gareth Southgate looks to his replacements though it is often Foden who is the one who is sacrificed to get some of England’s extra talent on the pitch.
In the semi-final, it was Cole Palmer who was introduced in Foden’s stead. Palmer is coming off the back of an excellent season for Chelsea, especially in terms of goalscoring. However, he also demonstrated his capability as a creator in the final third when he provided the pass for Ollie Watkins’ late winner in the semi-final.
Whoever comes on for Foden though is likely to be a player who has more than enough talent to make a good contribution for England to try and get a goal.
