Competition: Premier League

Chelsea will be bidding to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League when they play host to London rivals Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Following a timid 2-0 defeat to Man City on the opening weekend of the season, the Blues bounced back in style with a 6-2 win at Wolves last weekend.
In contrast, Crystal Palace have come away empty-handed from each of their opening two games of the season. Oliver Glasner’s side were beaten 2-1 by Brentford on matchday one and they have since been turned over 2-0 by West Ham.
The bookmakers’ odds suggest the Eagles’ wait for their first league win of the season will go on, as they make the short trip across town as 5.0 outsiders, while the draw is also deemed unlikely at 4.33.
Chelsea v Crystal Palace Best Bets
➡️ Chelsea to win & over 1.5 goals @ 1.73 with Paddy Power
➡️ Eberechi Eze to be fouled 2+ times @ 1.73 with Paddy Power
Confidence is bound to be high in the Chelsea camp following their 6-2 win over Wolves, making a home success and over 1.5 goals an appealing option at 1.73. While Enzo Maresca’s side have the talent to come out swinging against the Eagles, the defensive shortcomings they displayed against Wolves last weekend could be an issue.
As such, this capital clash has the makings of an entertaining contest, and the Blues may have to make the net bulge twice or more to bank maximum points. That was the case in each of Chelsea’s final nine Premier League victories last season, and that trend continued in last Sunday’s triumph at Wolves. It’s also worth noting that 15 of Crystal Palace’s last 16 defeats in the top-flight have produced a minimum of two goals, with two of those defeats coming against Chelsea.
Elsewhere, Eberechi Eze looks worth backing to be fouled twice or more at 1.73. Eze’s pace and trickery is a constant threat for the opposition, meaning he’s no stranger to being on the receiving end of fouls. The Eagles ace was fouled twice against West Ham last weekend and he has also earned his side a free kick against both Brentford and Norwich this season.
Last season, Eze was being fouled on average 2.10 times per-game in the Premier League, and there is plenty of scope for that trend to continue in Sunday’s showdown at Stamford Bridge when he goes up against a Chelsea side that have committed a combined total of 25 fouls across their opening two league games of the season.

📊 Chelsea Form and Stats
Following his appointment as Chelsea manager during the close season, Enzo Maresca could hardly have asked for a tougher start to his tenure with a home game against Man City. The Blues were outclassed in their season opener with Pep Guardiola’s side, with goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic firing the champions to victory at Stamford Bridge. However, Maresca got his maiden win as Blues boss at the second attempt, with his side seeing off Servette 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off tie.
Chelsea then produced a stunning second-half performance to put Wolves to the sword 6-2 last Sunday, picking up their first Premier League win of the season in the process. The capital club were worthy winners at Molineux, as they enjoyed 60% possession and the shot count was 14-12 in their favour, with eight of those efforts hitting the target in comparison to Wolves’ four.
Noni Madueke netted a hat-trick in last weekend’s 6-2 win at Wolves, hitting the back of the net with three of his six shots on goal.
Remarkably, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer provided an assist for all three of Madueke’s goals at Molineux. England international Palmer also opened up his account for the season with a real moment of magic, as he executed a first-time chip to put Chelsea 2-1 in front.
While Chelsea will have taken plenty of positives away from their performance against Wolves, they gave up almost two Expected Goals (xG), not to mention the hosts hit the woodwork twice.
📊 Crystal Palace Form and Stats
Crystal Palace ended last season as one of the most in-form sides in the Premier League but they have been unable to carry that momentum into the new campaign thus far. The Eagles were edged out 2-1 by Brentford and then slumped to a 2-0 loss at home to West Ham.
It’s worth pointing out that Oliver Glasner’s side saw the lion’s share of the ball in each of those two losses, though they did only manage to register two on-target efforts against West Ham last time out.
That coincides with the fact that Crystal Palace have yet to score from open play in the Premier League this season, with their goal against Brentford coming via an own goal, while they failed to breach West Ham’s backline in their subsequent fixture.
Having said that, Palace will have restored some confidence in midweek with their 4-0 win over Norwich in the second round of the EFL Cup. Jean-Philippe Mateta helped himself to a brace in that victory and the Frenchman will be looking to carry that form into Sunday’s all-London affair at Stamford Bridge.
While the season is still in its infancy, Palace have picked up six yellow cards across their opening two games of the campaign, a tally only marginally topped by newly-promoted Southampton (7).
Adam Wharton has been one of the most fouled players across the opening two weekend’s of the new Premier League season. The Eagles midfielder earned his side three free-kicks against Brentford before drawing a further four fouls from West Ham last weekend.
⚔️ Chelsea v Crystal Palace Head-to-Head
Chelsea have enjoyed a real spell of dominance in this fixture in recent seasons. The Blues have claimed top honours from each of the last 13 top-flight meetings between the pair, not to mention they also triumphed 2-0 in an FA Cup semi-final tie back in April 2022.
Last season’s corresponding fixture ended 2-1 to Chelsea, with Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke grabbing the goals. The Blues ran out 3-1 winners in the reverse fixture at Selhurst Park, with a Conor Gallagher brace and an Enzo Fernandez strike securing the points.
Crystal Palace last tasted victory in this fixture way back in October 2017, with Wilfried Zaha’s goal proving decisive in a 2-1 win for the Eagles.
