Inter v Red Star Belgrade
📅
Kick Off: Tuesday 1st October at 20:00
🏆
Competition: Champions League
📺
Watch Live: TNT Sports 7
Inter Milan host Serbian champions, Red Star Belgrade in their first home match of their Champions League campaign. Neither side was blessed with a simple draw by any means with Opta putting them both in the top 10 for difficulty but you’d certainly expect Inter to come out on top on this occasion. That said, while they didn’t manage to take anything away from the match, many were surprised to see Red Star Belgrade put up a spirited performance against Benfica in their Champions League opener so anything could happen.
⭐ Inter v Red Star Belgrade Best Bets
Red Star Belgrade have been bizarrely priced at 1.75 to win just three corners against Inter Milan and while they’re unlikely to dominate possession, we think this is a very real prospect.
The Serbian side have averaged 8.7 per 90 across their last six matches, accumulating at least three in all of them. Notably, that streak also includes two matches in the Champions League; one against Benfica and one against Bodo Glimt. In the tougher of the two against Benfica, they racked up seven corners.
Going back an extra season, we can see how they performed in their group which consisted of Man City, Young Boys, and RB Leipzig. Despite the tough opposition, this selection would have won in all of their games bar those against the reigning English Champions.
🔎 Inter v Red Star Belgrade Players to Watch
🔵 Lautaro Martinez
Lautaro Martinez has earned the right to be considered in this market in pretty much any game, but this one in particular looks like a fantastic opportunity to get ahead in the race for the Golden Boot.
It’d be his third in a row having recently scooped up awards in Serie A and Copa America. In the league Martinez scored 24 goals last season, averaging 0.81 per game, surely suggesting this selection merits intrigue.
Red Star Belgrade conceded at least 2 goals in each of their six Champions League clashes last season so chances are at least a few chances will come Martinez’s way.
🔵 Marcus Thuram
Thuram has excelled for Inter this season, drawing nine fouls across all competition and in doing so producing an average of 1.62 per 90. He’s only replicating his form of last season where he finished the Serie A campaign with an impressive 45 fouls won in just 2700 minutes.
Red Star Belgrade on the other hand have committed 12+ fouls in each of their three Champions League matches this season which also implies great value.

💻 Inter v Red Star Belgrade Form & Tactics
Inter seem to have evolved tactically this season under Simone Inzaghi, while still keeping his strategic values close to the core.
Their buildup play places an emphasis on triangles and third-man runs, creating numerical advantages all over the pitch with the help of highly fine-tuned rotational switches.
Over the course of the season, these have involved Acerbi creating chances from the left-wing, Martinez and Thuram both occasionally stepping into the role of a modern-day regista, and Calhanoglu excelling as a single pivot. We’re likely to see something very similar against Red Star Belgrade although the extent of rotation remains to be seen.
Vladan Milojević, who returned to Red Star Belgrade in 2023 relies on sharp attacking transitions, moving the ball forward with quick vertical passes to exploit spaces in the opposition backline.
Milojević has leaned towards a 4-2-3-1 formation, emphasising structure, and discipline in defensive phases.
His team will likely aim to sit in a compact mid-low block against Inter, minimising space between the lines and aiming to frustrate the opposition.
Although their fullbacks are often granted permission to roam forward and support the attack, it’s likely they may rely on goals from set-pieces and counter-attacks much more given the calibre of opposition.

🏁 Inter v Red Star Belgrade Ref Watch
- Felix Zwayer is the man with the power on Tuesday, taking the reins for his first Champions League match of the season.
- The name might ring a bell as he was the referee for England’s Euros semi-final clash with The Netherlands which was well-publicised by the media beforehand given the match-fixing scandal he was involved in, and his consequent clash with Bellingham
- Controversy aside, the German ref has awarded an average of 27.27 fouls, 0.29 penalties and 4.14 cards per 90 over the course of his career.
- Interestingly in his 30 UCL matches, his yellow card and penalty stats both significantly rise, reaching 5.27 cards and a remarkable 0.53 penalties.
