Borussia Dortmund have looked very fragile defensively this season, so they could struggle to keep free-scoring Celtic at bay. Nuri Sahin’s team conceded twice at home to Bochum on Friday night, and prior to that they shipped five away at Stuttgart and two in a home game with Heidenheim. It’s also worth pointing out that both teams scored in each of those three Bundesliga matches.

As such, free-scoring Celtic look well equipped to make their mark at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday night. Brendan Rodgers’ side have racked up a whopping 33 strikes across their nine matches in all competitions this season, firing in no fewer than 16 over their previous three assignments.

While Celtic’s backline has been keeping clean sheets on the domestic front with regularity this term, they did fail to shut out Slovan Bratislava on matchday one. Thus, a repeat of BTTS looks worth getting behind when BVB go up against the Bhoys.

Goals have been a regular feature in games involving these two sides this season, making over 2.5 goals an obvious angle of attack on Tuesday night. Borussia Dortmund have won each of their last two home games in the Bundesliga by a scoreline of 4-2. Either side of those home victories, BVB have won 3-0 away at Club Brugge and lost 5-1 on the road at Stuttgart.

As for Celtic, seven of their nine matches across all competitions this season have featured three or more match goals. In fact, Brendan Rodgers’ charges have chalked up three or more strikes on their own in each of those seven matches.

With that in mind, all the ingredients appear to be in place for a high-scoring shoot-out at the Westfalenstadion.

Callum McGregor tends to be deployed as the deepest of Celtic’s three midfielders and that coincides with him getting through a lot of dirty work in the middle of the park. The Celtic skipper should be kept busy on Tuesday night given the calibre of opposition he will be up against, and he therefore looks like a prime candidate to commit one or more fouls.

McGregor sinned no fewer than three times during the Bhoys’ 5-1 thumping of Slovan Bratislava and he also gave away a free kick during Celtic’s 3-0 win over Old Firm rivals Rangers at the start of September. It’s also worth noting that he was giving away an average of one foul per game across last season’s Scottish Premiership campaign.

McGregor will likely be tasked with keeping tabs on Dortmund playmaker Julian Brandt, who has drawn a foul from the opposition in three of his last four Bundesliga appearances.

Celtic are unlikely to sacrifice their attacking principles on Tuesday night, making them an appealing option to earn at least four corners. The Hoops have long had a reputation for being prolific corner-hitters in recent years, and that trend has shown no signs of slowing down this season. Brendan Rodgers’ side have earned 10 or more flag kicks in five of their nine outings this term, covering the 4+ line on each occasion.

Dortmund had to defend five corners in their maiden Champions League match of the season at Club Brugge. On top of that, Dortmund conceded 4+ corners in each of their three home games last season during the now-defunct group stage.

Arne Engels has been a standout performer for Celtic following his big-money move to Glasgow over the summer. The elegant Belgian playmaker has chipped in with two goals across his first five appearances. He was a constant threat during the 5-1 annihilation of Slovan Bratislava, scoring with one of his three on-target efforts. Engels also racked up four shots against Hearts during his first start for the Hoops, one of which hit the back of the net. Despite only recently arriving at the club, Engels also appears to have become the team’s designated penalty-taker.

Given how vulnerable Borussia Dortmund have looked defensively of late, coupled with the fact that they have given up a combined total of 19 shots on target across their last three matches, backing Engels to work the opposition goalkeeper just once on Tuesday night looks too big to ignore.

Emre Can committed two fouls during Borussia Dortmund’s 4-2 win over Bochum on Friday night and he merits support to do so again when he goes up against Celtic on Tuesday.

The Germany international was a serial offender during BVB’s run to last year’s Champions League final, averaging 1.62 fouls per game, picking up four yellow cards along the way.

It was a similar story on the domestic front last term, with Can’s fouls per 90 average in the Bundesliga at 1.30, collecting a further five yellow cards. He’ll be expected to carry out a shackling job on Celtic ace Arne Engels, who was fouled three times against Slovan Bratislava. The Belgian also earned the Bhoys four fouls across his first two Scottish top-flight appearances.

Celtic’s midfield and attack is likely to pose Borussia Dortmund plenty of problems, and that should lead to the hosts picking up at least a couple of bookings. Brendan Rodgers’ side have a real knack for drawing cards from their opponents, having done so in each of their nine outings this season. Across that nine-game sample, six of the Bhoys’ nine challengers have collected multiple cautions.

While Dortmund were shown just one yellow card away at Club Brugge, they have gone into the referees’ notebook twice or more in four of their five Bundesliga matches this season. That batch of games includes home matches with Heidenheim and Bochum, so another couple of cards should be within range against a slick Celtic side that are playing with a real swagger right now.

Brendan Rodgers is unlikely to abandon his attacking style on Tuesday night and his side carry more than enough threat to work the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper at least twice. Celtic are brimming with confidence at the moment, evidenced by the fact that they have scored 33 goals across their nine matches this season. What’s more, a whopping 16 of those strikes have arrived across their last three outings.

The Hoops racked up 16 shots in their matchday one victory over Slovan Bratislava, forcing the opposition goalkeeper into seven saves.

The likes of Heidenheim and Bochum have forced multiple saves from the home goalkeeper on recent visits to this venue, and Club Brugge drew five saves from Dortmund stopper Gregor Kobel a fortnight ago. Thus, Celtic look well placed to follow suit.
