Longford Town v Galway United (First Division)
🏟
Friday 25th March – 7:45PM KO
Not much on but Irish Division 1 football on Friday night where only goal difference separates league leaders Cork City and second-placed Galway United ahead of this weekend’s matches in the LOI First Division. United are the division’s only unbeaten side, having won 4 of their 5 matches, while John Caulfield’s team showed the sort of battling characteristics we’d associate with his best teams down the years when coming from 2-0 down to pick up a point against title favourites Waterford.
Despite such a strong start to the season, Galway haven’t looked impenetrable with the Tribesmen only keeping one clean sheet this season, while in their latest game away to a struggling Athlone Town side, Galway relied on a couple of goals from long thrown ins to bail them out of a spot of trouble against an Athlone side who can probably feel aggrieved to have left the game empty-handed.
Reviewing that performance and the many apparent gaps in the Galway defence should give Longford Town plenty of encouragement ahead of Friday’s home game against Galway. De Town arrive into this one off the back of a morale-boosting 3-0 away win against Wexford and while Galway will pose a much sterner test, Longford have scored in two of their three league games so far and will be expected to get on the scoresheet in front of their own fans.
Galway United have scored in every game so far this season and have scored two or more goals in all but one, such stats should make for entertaining viewing.

Cork City v Athlone Town (First Division)
🏟
Friday 25th March – 7:45PM KO
While Athlone Town can be pleased with their performance against Galway United last time out, and in particular the number of chances they created, they still lost the game and sit rock bottom as the league’s only pointless side.
In truth, Galway did not have to work too hard for their goals on Friday with two simple long throws into the Athlone box undoing all the home sides good work and as a result, Athlone have now conceded two or more goals in all four games this season, there’s no prizes for guessing where their issues lie.
Cork City on the other hand, sit top of the table after 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. The Rebels also sit top of the goals scored column with 14 goals in just 6 matches, while perhaps even more impressively, Cork City have conceded just once all season long.
Simply put, Cork City are a full-time professional outfit with huge expectations for this season while Athlone Town look like a team who were quickly thrown together in the off-season in the hope of just getting by. An early goal for Cork City and this could turn nasty in front of another huge home crowd at Turners Cross.

Treaty United v Waterford (First Division)
🏟
Friday 25th March – 7:45PM KO
The social media apologies were in full flow following Treaty’s 4-0 hammering at home to Cork City on Friday and things may get worse before they get better at the Market Fields with a refreshed Waterford team set to visit this weekend.
The Blues were on a bye in the previous game week and having suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Cork City last time out, the mini break should have allowed manager Ian Morris to refocus the minds and identify areas for improvement on the training ground.
Treaty United’s defending against Cork was amateur to say the least and if they turn up in a similar vein of form here, they’ll be punished big time with the likes of Junior Quitirna, Phoenix Patterson and Louis Britton in fine goal scoring form this season.
Take away the 2-0 loss to Cork and Waterford have scored in every other game this season, the lack of clean sheets (1) has been a concern but with Treaty failing to fire so far this term (1W, 1D, 2L), Waterford should have enough to condemn the Limerick men to back-to-back Munster derby defeats.
