Sion v Luzern
🏟
Wednesday 11th May – 7:30PM KO
As they enter Round 33 with just three games left to play, FC Sion may look back at their late 1-0 victory over Grasshoppers at the Letzigrund on Sunday as the pivotal moment that ensured they would prolong their sixteen-year stay in the top-flight. That result, only their fourth away win of the campaign, has moved them four points ahead of the dreaded relegation play-off spot. However, with the occupiers of that position set to make the trip down to the Valais, Sion could be dragged back into trouble very quickly indeed.
Luzern make that 268km journey fresh from the 4-0 thrashing they administered to Servette on Saturday. Given that GC had lost earlier in the day, it was a must-win match for Mario Frick’s men to keep themselves in touch at the bottom. A win on Wednesday would allow FCL, temporarily at least, to leapfrog Grasshoppers into safety and also move one point behind Sion in seventh.
Having yet failed to score against any side in the lower half of the table and also having only lost once to a team outside the top half, it is fair to say that Sion provide strong opposition at home and will fancy their chances against a Luzern side that hasn’t kept an away clean sheet all season. That being said, Luzern have only failed to score away from the swissporarena in matches against Basel and Zurich, so I fancy them to score as well.

Servette v Lugano
🏟
Wednesday 11th May – 7:30PM KO
It appears that all is not well at the Stade de Geneve in the closing weeks of the season. SFC are all but safe from being dragged into the relegation battle, but they suffered a fourth straight defeat at the weekend, a pretty chastening 4-0 loss away to FC Luzern. As you can imagine, the fallout was not pretty either as manager Alain Geiger openly criticised the players and the board.
The atmosphere is a lot rosier in Lugano ahead of this one. The Ticino club returned to winning ways with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Young Boys at the Cornaredo that closed the gap between the two, and that final European spot, to just three points. With a Swiss Cup final spot already booked, this season has been a resounding success for Lugano, but pipping YB at the post would be a remarkable feat.
Lugano can take advantage of the disarray and lack of confidence in the Servette camp on Tuesday. They haven’t lost to their opponents in the previous three encounters this season and are unbeaten at the Stade de Geneve since 2015. Having returned to form last weekend, I think Lugano will be able to extend that run here.

FC Basel v Grasshoppers
🏟
Thursday 12th May – 7:30PM KO
A season that promised much for FC Basel in the first half has stuttered towards the finish line in 2022. A lack of consistency prevented the 20-time Swiss champion from mounting a serious challenge to FC Zurich in the end, but they’ll be content with a second-place finish ahead of Young Boys and encouraged by the possibility of a new manager and promised new signings in the summer to make a real crack at bringing the title back to St. Jakob-Park.
Despite that four-point lead over YB, the job isn’t done yet for FCB, and the same can be said for Grasshoppers in eighth. Their home loss to Sion at the weekend has left them only three points clear of the promotion play-off and in a position where they can ill-afford any further slip-ups.
This fixture between Switzerland’s two most successful sides used to be played with consequences for the title, often the narrative. Times may have changed, but it doesn’t make this any less important to GC as they attempt to stay in the league for more than just one season.
FCB will have no problems finding their scoring touch again at home but they also give up at least two or three quality chances to the opposition per match. I think GC can take advantage of that and get on the scoresheet too, much like they did in the 2-2 draw at the Joggeli in mid-December.

FC Zurich v Lausanne
🏟
Thursday 11th May – 7:30PM KO
If FCZ were in full party mode after their title win a couple of weeks ago, you wouldn’t know it. It was business as usual for der Stadtclub on Saturday evening as they refused to take the foot off the gas and posted an impressive 2-1 victory away to St. Gallen, the first loss at home for FCSG since early December.
At the other end of the spectrum, Lausanne were finally confirmed as relegated in their goalless draw at home with FC Basel. After their return season had gone so well, not many would have predicted LS to have struggled as badly as they did this time around. In truth, their hopes of staying in the league had all but evaporated by mid-February.
It is no surprise to say that there is a vast difference between these two teams. Lausanne will end this season with their lowest points tally since 2002 and can only try to prevent Zurich from taking another three points that will edge the new champions closer to matching their points record (79) that they set in their last title-winning season in 2009.
Despite their respective seasons being over with the confirmation of the title and of relegation, FCZ showed they are not going to let up. They’ve already beaten LS on three occasions in 2021/22 and I expect them to complete the perfect record at the Letzigrund.
