Nacional v Gral Caballero
🏟
Monday 19th September – 9:45PM KO
Nacional will have the chance to go outright top with a home win against a General Caballero side that hasn’t won in Asunción since this same fixture in May.
Facundo Bruera is back among the goals and tapped in an equalizer against Olimpia. It was his third in four games, all from open play. Pedro Sarabia had started a more defensive side but expect Carlos Arrúa and possibly Gustavo Caballero to be in the first eleven for this game. Nacional are on a five game unbeaten streak and have only lost to defending champions Libertad in the last thirteen league games.
Gustavo Florentín has struggled for results since taking over at Gral Caballero. Just the one league triumph against lowly 12 de Octubre in their last seven. Both Juan José Heinze and captain José Vera saw red against Sol and will miss this clash. Their goal hopes will rest on former MLS striker Guillermo Hauche, the ex-NE Revs forward scored in the previous game to snap a 12-game drought.Although the Academia have performed better away from the Arsenio Erico stadium, they still look good value for a home win against a team missing key players as they look to continue their title challenge.

Guaraní v Olimpia
🏟
Tuesday 20th September – 12.15AM KO
This is the oldest game in Paraguayan football, known locally as the clásico añejo, but there isn’t much rivalry given current standings. Guaraní are languishing in ninth but did get a boost after scoring twice in stoppage time to turn the game around against Ameliano.
The victory means Fernando Jubero’s team have a decent home record going into this fixture. Just one defeat so far (vs 12 de Octubre) which was also the only home match they didn’t score in. The big issue has been defensively, since Roberto Fernández left for Russia (Dynamo Moscow) they have kept just one clean sheet.
Olimpia head into the weekend in third but just one point off the top and in with a real chance of a first league title since 2020. Derlis González will still be out (suspension) while Fernando Cardozo also misses out having picked up five yellow cards. The pressure is on Montenegro and Recalde to supply the goals while Julio César Cáceres’ backline have gone four matches without a clean sheet.
Despite Guarani‘s struggles they are good for a goal, and BTTS has landed in six of their last seven. Similarly, Olimpia have seen BTTS occur in four of their last five games.
