Barnet v Yeovil Town
The turnaround at Barnet has happened a lot quicker than perhaps even Dean Brennan anticipated.
Having been something of a basket case for two a bit years, Barnet have propelled themselves as mainstays in the top seven this season thanks to some impressive recruitment and continued management from Brennan. They have drawn their last two, on the back of five straight victories, and also beat a weakened Solihull Moors away in the FA Trophy at the weekend. They have won eight of 13 at home this season and two of those defeats came during their one downturn in form this season through September.
Variance finally hit Yeovil Town at the weekend in a 4-1 loss at Bromley, their first defeat in the league since the start of November. They had conceded just two goals in their previous seven matches but have been giving away just shy of 0.5 more xG per game than they have created. The Glovers are yet to win on the road, having drawn seven and lost five. They even failed to beat a Dorking Wanderers reserve side in the FA Trophy. They have lost three of their four away matches against sides in the top eight. The decision for Jamie Andrews to return to West Bromwich Albion after his loan spell has left Cooper trying to find short-term solutions to give his side a chance ahead of the run-in of avoiding relegation concerns.
Dagenham and Redbridge v Eastleigh
A selection based on a team that are very good at home beating a side that are very poor away.
Dagenham and Redbridge are in a fine vein of form at the moment, winning six of their last eight matches to propel themselves back into the top seven and into the play-off picture. Their home form has been key to that, winning seven of their 13 matches at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. That record becomes more impressive when you remove games against the current top four – seven wins, three draws and one loss. They have lost two of their last three at home but one came against high-flying Woking and the other in a game they dominated against Torquay United. Striker Paul McCallum has returned to the side, a huge boost, and they have even kept four clean sheets in their last seven.
Only Scunthorpe United have a worse away record than Eastleigh, who have won one, drawn three and lost nine times on the road. They have lost every away match they have played against sides in the current top 13 and failed to score more than once in all but one away match – away at struggling Oldham Athletic. Furthermore, they have been dealt the blow of losing right-back Brennan Camp and forward Ryan Hill for up to two months through injury, two of their most energetic and tenacious players. Manager Lee Bradbury has often chopped and changed to keep players fresh but may be forced into selecting a particular XI for this one rather than one that suits that match ahead.
Solihull Moors v Aldershot Town
Solihull Moors have not been in a great place recently. Neal Ardley has been forced to chop and change due to ongoing issues for Callum Howe, Alex Gudger and Jamey Osborne. His captain, Kyle Storer, has been allowed to move into part-time football and Fiacre Kelleher has gone. However, they are starting to get somewhere. Tom Whelan and Oisin Smyth have joined on loan to boost the midfield. Bartosz Cybulski offers an alternative threat up top. Ben Coker is fit again and James Clarke, Alex Gudger, Ryan Barnett and Josh Kelly should return to the side having been rested for the FA Trophy game at the weekend.
Their home form is often excellent too. After match day three, they won 14 and drew three of their 19 home matches last season. Against sides outside of the top seven, that record read 12 wins and two draws. Against sides not in the current top eight this season, they have won five of seven home matches and their only match against a side in the current top eight – they still have seven of those sides to play at the ARMCO Arena.
They face an Aldershot Town side whose away record against the top 15 reads one win and five losses – and that victory at Boreham Wood was against the run of play and occurred on match day three. Ross McNeilly has seen his side lose three of their last four on the road, only beating lowly-Gateshead, and seven of their last nine in the league overall. McNeilly only had 14 senior players available for their last league game and his two most recent signings are being integrated having played at a lower level. McNeilly questioned fans’ reactions recently and that is unlikely to help matters.
Wealdstone v Oldham Athletic
This was the fixture fans of Oldham Athletic were mocked with as their club fell through the League Two trapdoor and into non-league. And such are the continued issues they face, they come into it as slight underdogs.
Wealdstone continue to defy the odds. This part-time outfit are producing a remarkable campaign, currently sat in ninth place a point off sixth place Southend United and having been able to strengthen further with the signing of Corie Andrews from Torquay United. The Stones come into this game having won five of their last nine in the league, drawing three others. They have won three of their last four at home, the draw coming against Wrexham. Their home record against sides below the top seven reads five wins and two draws from eight matches and their overall record against bottom half sides reads eight wins, four draws and one loss.
The Latics, unlike Wealdstone, come into this game having played at the weekend and it didn’t go well, a near-full strength side losing at home to Gateshead. Their record on the road has been awful this season, winning only once – against a Dorking Wanderers side who created as much as Oldham despite the scoreline. That win was one of two victories they have had since mid-October, the other coming in a topsy-turvy affair against fellow strugglers Torquay United. Oldham have lost all seven away matches against sides currently 13th or higher in the league.
