Wednesday’s Champions League Accumulator Tips
Inter scored in all their Champions League away games last term so we should see a good game. They have the players to create chances and score with Thuram, Martinez, Mkhitaryan and Çalhanoğlu. City have already conceded at home to Ipswich and Brentford this season and Inter clearly have more quality than these two sides. So far this season, City have averaged 1.06 xGA
Inter in last season Champions League scored an average of 1.25 goals with a xG of 1.93 whilst conceding 1.25 xGA.
City conceded in 9 of their 10 Champions League games last season with the only clean sheet coming at home to Young Boys. The hosts won every game in the competition until they faced Real Madrid and went out on penalties. City win and both teams to score landed in eight of 10 Champions League games and so far, this season domestically it’s been three of four.
PSG have started their domestic league with W4-D0-L0 scoring an average of 4.0 goals per match. Their last 14 home Champions League matches have returned W9-D2-L3 scoring an average of 2.14 goals. Eight of their nine home Champions League wins have been when they have scored at least two goals, the only game they won 1-0 was over Real Madrid back in February 2022.
Girona were the surprise package in La Liga last season finishing third, just four points behind Barcelona. Their away record against the top seven in La Liga last season was W1-D2-L3. They only kept four away clean sheets with three of these coming at the bottom five clubs. Last term they conceded an average of 1.37 goals with a xGA of 1.93.
Sparta have played 13 games this season in all competitions and these games have averaged 3.15 goals with both teams scoring landing in eight, whilst they have scored an average of 2.31. Iron Sparta came through qualifying meaning they have already played six games in this seasons Champions League in which they have scored two or more goals in five with a match average of 3.17.
Last season they played 14 European games as they failed in qualifying for the Champions League and then entered the Europa League before being beaten 5-1 and 6-1 by Liverpool. Over these 14 games there was an average of 3.57 goals with both teams scoring in 11.
Salzburg have started their domestic season with W3-D0-L1 with a match average of 4.25 goals, scoring 11 in four matches. They also came through qualifying with four matches played and an average of 3.25 match goals. Both teams scoring landed in three of their four qualification matches.
The hosts last played at this level in the 1960s so just qualifying for the competition is a reason for celebration. Unfortunately, for the hosts last season’s excellent results have come at a cost. Manager, Thiago Motta moved on and joined Juventus and key players Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori have both left for the Premier League. Vincenzo Italiano has been brought in to replace Motta and he has decent pedigree in European competitions as he has reached the final of the last two Europa Conference League finals.
Bologna have an excellent home record with W12-D7-L2, losing just once in twenty home matches and they face Ukrainian Shakhtar who have a poor away European record. Over their last 20 European ties they have returned W6-D2-L12 conceding a massive 45 goals. Their wins have come over Royal Antwerp, Genk, Monaco, Leipzig in 2022, Maccabi Tel Aviv and then Real Madrid back in 2020.
Celtic have never won the opening game of a Champions League campaign with W0-D2-L10, but they won’t have a better chance to change it then Wednesday night. It should be a great atmosphere at Celtic Park on Wednesday night as Celtic welcome Slovan Bratislava. The hosts were competitive at home last season with W1-D1-L1. Their only defeat came against Lazio, as the Rome team scored in 95th minute to secure a 2-1 win. They held Atletico to a 2-2 draw and then beat Feyenoord 2-1. Celtic will see this as a winnable game. They host Club Brugge, RB Leipzig and Young Boys whilst travelling to Dortmund, Atalanta, Dinamo Zagreb and Aston Villa, so this is one of the games they will target as three points if they want to progress.
Slovan are playing in their first-ever Champions League match in the full competition having failed in qualification previously. They have won just five of their last 12 away European ties with their two most recent victories coming over SK Stum Graz and KL Klaksvik. They have progressed through qualification winning all four home games by an aggregate score of 14 vs 4, but on the road its W1-D3-L0. They have been fortunate in their progress as despite conceding an average of 0.88 goals they have allowed a xGA of 1.35 and on the road, this moves to 1.45.
These two sides have faced each other four times over the last six years and Dortmund hold the upper hand with W3-D1-L0 scoring six across their last two meetings. Dortmund made the final last year, but on the road their results were mixed with defeats at Atletico and PSG, a draw with PSV and then excellent wins at Newcastle, Milan and PSG in the semi-final. They only kept two clean sheets over these six games. All but two of their last 11 Champions League campaigns have seen them qualify for the knockout rounds, so that will be their aim this term.
Brugge reached the semi-final of the Europa Conference league last season and have a strong home record although at a lesser level than the Champions League. Their recent home record in Europe is W6-D3-L0 whilst finding the net in all nine.
