The best E/W bets for Saturday's Racing

Resemblance holds a Racing Rating of 8.1 ahead of the 13:35 at Doncaster.

I held Resemblance in quite high regard throughout the spring; after watching her run at Haydock, I thought she might go on to a listed contest, running home Sea Venture and beating Jazz Queen and Minzelle. Sea Venture did go on to place at listed level at Royal Ascot, and was far from disgraced when 6th in the Rockfel Stakes. Resemblance hasn't quite lived up to that, but she's stepped back to 6f today, which is a positive.

The biggest positive, however, is the booking of Ryan Moore. The Greatest Jockey of All Time takes over the reigns, and this is a statement of intent from the Bell yard. Ryan Moore doesn't ride a horse in a contest like this unless he believes it can win, and from everything we've seen, I believe all is in favor of Resemblance bouncing back to the level she showed at Haydock in May.

Advertised holds a Racing Rating of 7.8 ahead of the 14:10 at Doncaster.

Advertised has come alive this autumn and has deservedly been moved into listed company here, after flying home in a handicap to put his mark up to 98. Advertised re-opposes Coul Angel, but now on level terms, which will require a decent amount of improvement from Advertised to reverse that form, but he showed that when winning a Class 2 at Doncaster.

William Buick takes the ride here, and his 28.6% strike rate over the last two weeks puts him at the top of the field in this contest. Advertised will be a very interesting prospect in this type of race for the first time. I'm not sure he'll have enough to beat Coul Angel, but he won't be far behind.

Wearelongterm holds a Racing Rating of 9.0 ahead of the 14:35 at Kelso.

Wearelongterm has been a fantastic servant for the Dianne Sawyer yard over the years, racking up 12 Top Three finishes in 29 starts; however, at 9, He finally showed his true potential, winning by 17l over course and distance.

He has been risen 8lb for that effort, which seems fair, but also workable, if he builds on that display. The key that day was that he went from the front, almost unchallenged, to dictate proceedings, and the result was spectacular. He'll look to do the same today, and he re-opposes an old rival in Burning Up, whom he comfortably beat at Perth in September.

Leading Times holds a Racing Rating of 8.4 ahead of the 17:30 at Southwell.

The drift from 15/2 to 12/1 is very concerning, however, it does give us the opportunity to back a horse like this at quite a price. The combination of Kaiya Fraser and Rebecca Menzies has been one of the season's better stories, and it's gone a little under the radar. Kaiya Fraser is 12 from 86 here at Southwell, with an A/E of 1.23, which is encouraging here, and hopefully he can find his form today.

Leading Times has one path to victory today, as I see it: he has to get to the front and stay there. He has held the lead 50% of the times he gets to dictate, it will be challenging here with at least three clear prominent runners, but a strong ride from Kaiya would certainly give us an edge. This is Leading Times' stable and ownership debut after being sold recently, hopefully Menzies wants to impress.

Champion Jockey Billy Loughnane jumps on board here for Ollie Sangster and partners a horse that was flying up the handicap over its last few efforts but was tamed slightly by a disappointing second when sent off at 8/13f. Funnily enough, the Vice-Champion Jockey, Oisin Murphy, was beaten on board Ridger last time; hopefully Billy can go one better.

Ridger landed a handicap at Kempton off a 6lb lower mark at the start of October, and as I watch that effort back, I'm confident he can overcome the rise and return to winning ways here. When he was pulled out to challenge that day, he fought gamely before kicking on from the rest in impressive fashion; he holds a leading chance today. Let's hope Godolphin's latest hire can bring this one home.

What Is an Each-Way Bet?

An each-way bet is two bets in one. Your stake is split equally between a win bet and a place bet. The place part pays out if your selection finishes within a set number of positions rather than winning outright.

Both halves are settled separately, so your bet can deliver a return even if your selection doesn't come first. As long as it places, the second half of your stake pays out at a reduced fraction of the outright odds.

That's the main appeal of each-way betting because it rewards a placing, not just a win. In racing, where fields are often large and unpredictable, that extra margin can make all the difference.

How Each-Way Odds Work

The place part of an each-way bet doesn't pay out at the full win odds - it pays out at a fraction of them, usually a quarter or a fifth depending on the race. So a selection priced at 8/1 each-way with quarter odds on the place part would return winnings at 2/1 if it places but doesn't win.

How Many Places Pay Out

The number of paid places on an each-way bet isn't fixed - it varies by field size, race type and which bookmaker you're betting with.

A small field might only pay the first two places, while a large field could pay four, five or more, and some bookmakers extend that further as part of a specific offer.
