What Is an Each-Way Bet?

An each-way bet is two bets in one. Your stake is split equally between a win bet and a place bet. The place part pays out if your selection finishes within a set number of positions rather than winning outright.  

Both halves are settled separately, so your bet can deliver a return even if your selection doesn't come first. As long as it places, the second half of your stake pays out at a reduced fraction of the outright odds.

That's the main appeal of each-way betting because it rewards a placing, not just a win. In racing, where fields are often large and unpredictable, that extra margin can make all the difference. 

How Each-Way Odds Work

The place part of an each-way bet doesn't pay out at the full win odds - it pays out at a fraction of them, usually a quarter or a fifth depending on the race. So a selection priced at 8/1 each-way with quarter odds on the place part would return winnings at 2/1 if it places but doesn't win. 

How Many Places Pay Out

The number of paid places on an each-way bet isn't fixed - it varies by field size, race type and which bookmaker you're betting with.

A small field might only pay the first two places, while a large field could pay four, five or more, and some bookmakers extend that further as part of a specific offer.
