Rangers travel to Fir Park on Sunday for a Scottish Premiership clash with Motherwell in which they will attempt to keep the pressure up on Celtic at the top of the table.
Recent weeks have been very good for Philippe Clement’s side who have come to within touching distance of their rivals at the top of the table, having played one game fewer. On top of this, they have progressed in the Europa League thanks to their first ever win away to Spanish opposition and they picked up the season’s first trophy via a 1-0 win over Aberdeen in the League Cup final.
The challenge now is to maintain that momentum into next week’s blockbuster derby with Celtic, although they have a fixture against Ross County at Ibrox to navigate in addition to this short trip to Motherwell. With as many as eight players potentially missing out, striking a balance between resting players and putting out a competitive side will be a tough task for Clement.
On recent form, the Steelmen should have no chance. Stewart Kettlewell’s side are without a win in their last 14 matches, yet they did manage to frustrate Celtic in a recent trip to Parkhead.
Their recent record against Rangers is unimpressive, though. They have lost their last four home matches against the Ibrox club as well as five in succession, overall.

🏆 Match stats: Gers to continue fine form
Rangers rightly start as strong favourites to win this match, with Philippe Clement’s side having won 13 of their last 16 in all competitions. Motherwell’s record is virtually the inverse of this, making the Ibrox side clear favourites to take maximum points, even if their price of 1.29 is not particularly appetising.
Rangers may not be able to win matches in spectacular fashion at present, but they have scored at least twice in eight of the 10 league matches they have played since Michael Beale was sacked in October, they should have the capacity to find the target with relative ease in North Lanarkshire.
With six of their nine Premiership games under Clement ending in victories with a margin of two or more goals, backing the Gers on a -1 handicap at 1.91 looks a good addition to a Rangers bet builder.
Another area where there could be value in this encounter is goals. Motherwell’s home matches have nearly averaged four per game this season, with the Steelmen conceding an average of two per match in front of the Fir Park crowd while scoring only marginally fewer.
Only two of the home side’s nine Premiership matches this season have failed to produce at least three goals, with the hosts netting in all but one game. This is reflective of the fact that they are better going forward than they are defensively.
Predictions:
⚽ Rangers (-1 handicap) @ 1.91
⚽ Over 2.5 goals @ 1.57
🎯 Shooting stats: Dessers gaining strength
Rotation is likely to come into play for both of these teams on Sunday, which is something worth bearing in mind for any Motherwell v Rangers bet builder. In particular, the visitors are coming off an intense period of fixtures and will want their players in prime condition for Celtic next week, bearing in mind there is also a midweek match against Ross County to come.
One player who looks set to start, however, is Cyriel Dessers, who is coming into form recently, and with Kemar Roofe likely to miss out and Danilo certainly not featuring, he is the natural option to start as a number nine.
Dessers posts 2.9 shots per 90 in the Premiership this season and is visibly increasing in confidence. He has scored in three of his last four matches in all competitions and is a nice price to find the net in this game.
Look for Todd Cantwell to get a more prominent role than he has been offered lately, too. His individual numbers have suffered since Clement took charge, but this is an opportunity to show the Belgian what he can do.
Predictions:
⚽ Cyriel Dessers to score anytime @ 2.00
⚽ Cyriel Dessers to have 2+ shots on target @ 1.83
🛑 Fouls stats: Teasy Todd worth a look
Look to players who are likely to start this game for value in a Rangers bet builder, with the all-action Cantwell the shortest price among Clement’s troops to commit fouls. Dessers looks a better value bet in that regard as he is committing more than 2 fouls per 90 minutes this season across all competitions and 1.98 in the Premiership.
The best bet, though, is Dujon Sterling. He will surely start out of position in central midfield again due to a chronic lack of options in that area and posts 1.9 fouls per 90.
Likeliest to lead the foul count from a Motherwell perspective is Callum Slattery, with the left-sided central midfielder set to face a stern defensive test. On average, he commits 1.85 fouls per game.
Brodie Spencer at right wing back is another regular who boasts a high foul count for the Amber and Claret. He will have his work cut out against Borna Barisic.
As a final note, if Sima does start this game, he has a high foul count and a price of 2.63 for him to give away two or more free kicks looks strong value, though it is worth waiting until Rangers’ starting XI has been announced before risking this.
Predictions:
⚽ Dujon Sterling to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.62
⚽ Cyriel Dessers to commit 2+ fouls @ 1.8
