After winning last weekend’s Scottish accumulator, we’re back and ready to do it all over again. We’ve got enticing looking cards across all four divisions this weekend and with the leagues really beginning to take shape we’re starting to see some teams pull away, others falter and some defy expectations. One such side who are impressing is Tam Courts’ Dundee United.
Dundee United v Ross County

Scottish Premiership
Currently sat above the more fancied Celtic, Aberdeen and St. Johnstone Dundee United are going nicely in 5th place and look a well-drilled side with plenty of quality. The re-birth of Peter Pawlett has given Courts such a dangerous outlet up top, and the former Aberdeen man is proving key in the early rounds of the Premiership, effectively knitting the midfield and attack together, something that was sorely missing at Tannadice last season.
They’re still not consistent scorers but they are highly efficient. 1-0 home wins against Dundee and Rangers have been augmented by successful trips to Celtic, St. Mirren and St. Johnstone. They’ve retained a lot of the solidity Mickey Mellon instilled last season but do look a more capable attacking force (even if their goal tally isn’t huge) with a midfield three of Ian Harkes, Jeando Fuchs and Dylan Levitt looking the real deal.
A side that looks far from the finished product is Ross County, with the Staggies only off the foot of the standings thanks to Dundee having scored fewer than their six. That does mean they’ve notched more than their opponents this weekend but a points difference of eight shows you the varying degrees of ruthlessness employed by the respective sides. I spoke of Ross County’s woes last week and having failed to get anything from Motherwell they’ll likely be in for another fruitless haul today against a United side with similar quality.

Prediction: Dundee United to Win
Hearts v Motherwell

Scottish Premiership
Speaking of Graham Alexander’s Well… well they’re flying. They’re yet to taste defeat in the league since the opening day of the season and sit just two points off top spot coming into this weekend’s games. One of the three teams ahead of them, though, is their hosts today, with Robbie Neilson’s charges taking to life back in the top flight like a duck to water.
Hearts have only been outscored by Celtic and Hibs this far into the campaign and Hearts do look a more capable attacking unit than many gave them credit for going into the season. They’ve got the division’s best number nine over the opening seven ties in Liam Boyce, with only Martin Boyle banging in more so far. They’ve failed to score in just one of their seven games, with the Edinburgh derby (a game that could’ve easily seen a few goals had it not been for the inspired form of the two keepers) being the Jambos’ only game that’s failed to land Over 1.5 Goals.
Motherwell’s Over 1.5 Goals record is identical, with Alexander’s men actually scoring in all seven of their Premiership games to date. It’s no coincidence either, they’ve got a lot of talent in their side and although there were teething problems with the 4-3-3 formation when deployed in the League Cup, it’s reaping the rewards for the men from North Lanarkshire while also making them conducive to overs goals betting.

Kilmarnock v Raith Rovers

Scottish Championship
Moving down from the Premiership for the final two selections of the acca, I feel like Killie could be set to pull away and really assert their dominance on a division they should be winning. The draw at Arbroath last Friday night will likely be looked back on as a good point, especially if they can pick up all three this weekend.
Raith are no mugs by any stretch of the imagination but, even though it was a derby game, dropping points to Dunfermline does show that they don’t have the legs to keep pace with those above them, not that there’s much shame in that. It does however suggest that they may struggle to get anything from Rugby Park having had just two days to prepare for this one after a fiercely contested derby.
Killie have strengthened their front line ahead of this one too. I like Innes Cameron and thought he might have taken a game under Tommy Wright at this level but just two goals in 11 games this season suggest maybe another loan move away was needed, and that’s what he’s got as he’s off to Queen of the South, with St. Johnstone’s Callum Hendry replacing him in Kilmarnock.
Hendry played his best football of his young career just before Wright left St. Johnstone and I really wouldn’t be surprised to see them help each other out again, this time a level down the pyramid. If they do, it will be bad news for their Championship rivals, starting with Raith this weekend.

Airdrie v Clyde

Scottish League One
The final selection of the acca takes us to the Excelsior and a tie at the wrong end of the third tier that could be filled with goals.
Six of Airdrie’s Eight League One games this season have landed Over 2.5 Goals with them having a lovely and symmetrical goals column of 11 for and 11 against. They’re a side with bountiful attacking options and the arrival of Callum Smith adds to what is a squad capable of being far higher than their lowly 7th spot. Their manager has spoken of this game kick-starting their season if they can get all three points, though I think they might just struggle to do that, they should make this a very enthralling affair against the division’s entertainers.
Seven of Clyde’s eight League Ones ties have seen at least three goals scored with The Bully Wee laying claim to a woeful defensive record but one of the league’s consistently best strikers. David Goodwillie is tied with Montrose’s Graham Webster at the top of the scoring charts and no player has more in the SPFL this season than his eight strikes. He’ll almost certainly be involved to help us get another tick and winning accumulator this weekend in what will likely be a goal-laden tie between two sides who will have ambitions of giving themselves breathing room from the foot of the table this weekend.

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals
