Man City v Southampton Match Preview

Manchester City arrive at Wembley in the form of their season, having won their last 5 matches while keeping clean sheets against Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea in that run. Pep Guardiola's side have timed their surge well, and much of their second-half resurgence is attributed to January recruitment — Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo have strengthened a squad that is now pushing Arsenal hard at the top of the Premier League. Guardiola also has an excellent record at Wembley, with City most recently beating Arsenal 2-0 in the EFL Cup final.

Significant rotation is expected here, with City having travelled to Burnley in midweek and facing a trip to Everton next week. James Trafford is likely to start in goal, with Phil Foden, Tijjani Reijnders, and Rayan Ait-Nouri all in contention for starting roles after limited opportunities this season. City have been operating in a 4-2-4 shape without the ball, a structure that caused Arsenal significant problems, though Southampton may be less constrained in their approach and better placed to exploit the space behind City's advanced full-backs.

Southampton have been one of the Championship's more compelling stories under Tonda Eckert, having recovered from a difficult start under Will Still to push firmly into play-off contention. Eckert's side have shown resilience in recent cup ties against Fulham and Arsenal, though they will need some fortune again here against a City squad with considerably more quality. Flynn Downes is suspended after accumulating too many yellow cards in the FA Cup, which is a notable loss for Southampton in midfield.

How To Get Your Free Bets on Man City v Southampton

This expert bet builder is the perfect qualifying bet - place it to unlock your free bets, win or lose.

Each selection has been taken from our Man City v Southampton Bet Builder, which you can find live on our Predictions Page.

  • Over 0.5 Man City @ 1.36

Southampton have drawn at least one yellow card from opponents in each of the last two FA Cup rounds, including a cynical counter-attack foul from Fulham's Cuenca.

Tactical fouls from City when Southampton break should create clear booking opportunities for referee Craig Pawson, who averages 2.42 cards per game in the Premier League this season.

At 1.3, this line offers strong value for what is typically priced at 1.17 or lower.

  • Man City GK to Make 2+ Saves @ 1.44

Southampton have gone unbeaten in 20 games since January 17th, including FA Cup wins over Fulham and Arsenal, and won't simply sit back against City.

Trafford looks set to start after playing in the EFL Cup final, where he made four key saves to keep City in the game.

Across his four FA Cup appearances this season, Trafford has made 10 saves in total (2.50 per 90) and kept two clean sheets.

  • Phil Foden to have 1+ Shots on Target @ 1.44

Foden has registered 10 goal contributions and seven goals across 21 Premier League starts, generating 51 total shots (2.51 per 90) with 17 on target (0.84 per 90).

He's been displaced from City's starting XI by Cherki, but should get an opportunity here to make an impact.

Southampton conceded 23 shots and seven on target in their quarter-final win over Arsenal, leaving the door open for Foden to test their keeper.

  • Shea Charles to Commit 2+ Fouls @ 2.0

Charles has committed 31 fouls across 19 Championship starts this season (1.46 per 90), a rate likely to rise against Premier League-quality opposition at Wembley.

He picked up a yellow card and committed two fouls against Bristol City last time out, and even managed a foul in just 14 minutes against Arsenal.

Foden — his likely main opponent — has won 27 fouls across 21 Premier League starts this season (1.33 per 90), giving Charles plenty of work to do.

Combine the above picks into a bet builder and back it with the required amount on any bookmaker included in this article to get your free bets.
