Arsenal to Win

Arsenal are probably the most complete side on the continent right now. It’s hard to find a weakness in the Gunners with Arteta’s side winning six of their eight Premier League matches so far, only dropping points against Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as Arsenal winning both of their Champions League matches against Athletic Bilbao and Olympiakos.

Atletico Madrid have picked up form in recent weeks and remain unbeaten across their last five, but their issue seems to be killing off games. Four of their nine LaLiga matches this term have ended in draws, and they lost on their last trip to England, which was on Matchday 1 of the Champions League against Liverpool.

Arsenal have won five of their six matches at the Emirates Stadium across all competitions, except a 1-1 draw against Manchester City. It would take a gargantuan effort from Atletico Madrid to overturn Arsenal here, with Mikel Arteta’s side repeatedly proving difficult to shift on home territory.

Over 4.5 Arsenal Corners

Arsenal scored another goal from a corner against Fulham last time out, once again underlining the serious threat that the Gunners carry from these situations. Arsenal racked up 10 corners in that game, taking their tally for the season to 63 (7.8 per game).

Atletico Madrid are likely to sit quite deep here, as they did in their visit to Anfield, which is a game state that suits a higher corner count for Arsenal, with the Gunners eager to take the game to the opposition with the form and confidence they currently have. Arsenal’s 63 corner tally in the Premier League is the most of any side in the top flight so far this term.

Arsenal have fallen short of this line in both of their Champions League matches so far, but both of those games did see heavy rotation, and Arteta is likely to go with a stronger side here, given the calibre of opposition. Chances from open play may also be harder to come by against a side like Atletico Madrid, so corners could prove to be a reliable avenue to goal as it has been for Arsenal in recent seasons.

Bukayo Saka to have 1+ Shots on Target

Saka came off the bench to score against Olympiakos in his first Champions League game of the season last time out, finding the back of the net inside just 17 minutes of action.

He’s scored a further two goals in the Premier League from four shots on target (0.82 per 90) and will prove pivotal to Arsenal’s chances of getting through what is set to be a very tight encounter.

Saka found the target from two shots in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage last time out, so he has a bit of form when it comes to shots on target.

Saka was very influential for Arsenal in the Champions League last season, netting six goals across his nine appearances in the competition. He had 14 shots on target across three matches (1.65 per 90) and overachieved his xG of 4.56.

Julian Alvarez to have 1+ Shots on Target

Julian Alvarez is one of the best strikers in Europe in my view, and can cause Arsenal real problems here with the form he’s shown in the early weeks of the season.

Alvarez scored and provided two assists in his only Champions League appearance of the season so far against Frankfurt. He had three shots on target in that game from four attempts overall.

As well as this strong record in the Champions League, Alvarez has also registered seven goal contributions across his nine appearances in LaLiga (6 goals, 1 assist), with two of these goals coming in a man of the match performance against Real Madrid, so Alvarez is a player who is primed for the big occasions.

Alvarez has found the target 14 times across his nine LaLiga appearances this term (1.78 per 90) and also found the target 11 times across his 10 Champions League appearances last season (1.25 per 90), netting seven goals in the process.

Over 1.5 Arsenal Goals

Atletico Madrid have had a few defensive issues in the early stages of the season, which Arsenal can look to take advantage of here. Diego Simeone’s side have kept just two clean sheets across their nine LaLiga matches so far this term, which is really out of character for a side that has built its reputation on their defensive solidity.

They’ve conceded 2+ goals in three of these matches, as well as shipping two goals against Liverpool and one goal against Frankfurt in the Champions League. Arsenal have scored 2+ goals in four of their last five matches, with the exception being their 1-0 win over Fulham, which was always going to be a low-scoring affair.

Arsenal have netted 11 goals across their four home games in the Premier League so far this season (2.75 per game). They’ve scored twice in both of their Champions League matches so far and can continue the streak against an Atletico Madrid side which doesn’t look as settled at the back as we’ve come to expect from Simeone’s side.

Eberechi Eze to Score or Assist

Eberechi Eze has registered three goal contributions across his nine appearances so far for Arsenal this term, with one goal and two assists. The goal came in the Carabao Cup, while the two assists have come through cameo appearances from the bench.

We’re still waiting for a performance from Eze, where he is the main man in the side, but I think that could come here with Arsenal sure to be needing something special from one of their more exciting players to break down a stubborn Atletico Madrid side.

Eze wasn’t at his best against Fulham last time out, but he should be motivated to make his first meaningful impact in the Champions League, which is his first experience of the competition.

Uncharacteristically, Atletico Madrid have only kept one clean sheet across their last five matches in all competitions, so there should be a few chances that fall Eze’s way here.

Robin Le Normand to Score or be Shown a Card

Le Normand has already received two yellow cards across his nine appearances in LaLiga this term and a further caution in the Champions League, which he picked up at Anfield in Atletico Madrid’s 3-2 loss to Liverpool last month.

He’s an incredibly aggressive centre back who steps out into advanced areas regularly. His clash with Viktor Gyokeres stands out to me here. Gyokeres is hunting for a goal having gone nine games now without a goal for the Gunners, so we can expect him to be pretty motivated for this clash.

Le Normand has only committed seven fouls across his nine LaLiga appearances (0.79 per 90), which is a record that tells us his fouls tend to be pretty reckless, as he doesn’t have to commit many to end up with a caution. Le Normand collected eight yellow cards across his 27 LaLiga appearances last season, picking up one extra caution across 232 minutes of Champions League action.

📈 Arsenal v Atletico Madrid Form & Tactics

Arsenal made it five wins in a row across all competitions with their 1-0 victory over Fulham last time out. Their goal came from a set piece, marking the eighth goal that Arsenal have scored from a set piece in the Premier League this season. This is a fantastic asset for Arsenal, but they will need to ensure that this doesn’t become an over-reliance - the Gunners have only scored five goals from open play so far this term.

Mikel Arteta’s biggest strength this season is his squad depth. Arsenal simply have more options to call upon, which can help them win or close out a game. Arsenal haven’t conceded a shot on target across their last two matches against Fulham and West Ham, which also shows you the strength of their defensive unit. They’re yet to concede in the Champions League and have conceded just three goals overall in the Premier League.

Atletico Madrid come into this game unbeaten across their last five matches in all competitions. Diego Simeone’s side look a little more open than they have done in recent campaigns, but this looks to be a purposeful shift when looking through their summer acquisitions. The two goals they scored against Liverpool last month show that they will carry an attacking threat here, though this is likely to be in short bursts rather than continued dominance.

Atletico Madrid recovered from their opening day defeat in the Champions League with a 5-1 victory over Frankfurt. Simeone will be eager to build on that result and also tidy up Atletico Madrid’s issues at the back, which have led to them failing to keep a clean sheet in four of their last five matches across all competitions.

📔 Arsenal v Atletico Madrid Formation & Team News

Arsenal line up in a 4-3-3, but this shape ends up being quite tactically flexible. If you want a clearer idea of the patterns that Arsenal look to form, I’d focus on the role of Riccardo Calafiori, who has been excellent from left back so far this season. He may start as a left back, but Calafiori ends up in all areas of the pitch and has had the second most shots of any Arsenal player so far this term.

In terms of absences, Arsenal are still expected to be without Odegaard while Madueke, Havertz, and Jesus remain sidelined for now as well. Arteta may look to rotate slightly here, but I can’t see any drastic changes with Atletico Madrid being a top side.

Atletico Madrid only have Johnny Cardoso on the injury list heading into this game, so Diego Simeone has a pretty decent squad to select from for this encounter. They have been lining up in a 4-4-2 at times this season, which is a favourite of Simeone’s, but he’s also trialled a 3-5-2 recently, which may be his preferred shape here, seeing as it’s how Atletico Madrid lined up for their 1-0 win over Osasuna - the only clean sheet they’ve managed across their last five matches.

📊 Arsenal v Atletico Madrid Key Stats

  • Arsenal have won their last five matches, conceding just one goal across these games.

  • Atletico Madrid have kept just one clean sheet across their last five matches.

  • Arsenal have won both of their Champions League games so far to nil.

  • Atletico Madrid have scored in each of their last five matches.
