With so much on the line in the game in Madrid tonight and with Atletico the Kings of all Kings of s***housing, I thought I would put together a Cards Treble for this one. As things stand, both of these European giants are facing early elimination from this seasons Champions League. Liverpool have absolutely walked Group B and have already qualified with Porto currently in 2nd. Both Atletico and Milan are still very much in with a shout of qualification but this is a huge game for both sides and I am expecting fireworks.
With all that in mind, I have put together a Card Sheet for the game tonight along with my three favourite tips to pick up a booking this evening. Hopefully, it is as fiery as I think it will be and we can find ourselves a tasty little winner!
Atletico Madrid v AC Milan Booking Tips
Jose Gimenez to be Carded
With Felipe suspended following his red card against Liverpool last time out, the Uruguayan international will be the leader of the back-line and I expect him to be riled up for this one. Up against the physical presence of one of if not both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Olivier Giroud the physical battle will be immense tonight and I fancy the defender to lose his cool.
Gimenez is renowned for combative and streetwise old-school defender that thrives in a team that builds their side from the back. He learnt from the best for both club and country as he spent many years partnering Diego Godin who for many years was pretty much as good as they came around Europe. However, this win at all costs mentality means like Godin, he isn’t shy of picking up a card or two as his stats suggest. Referring to his Card Sheet you can see why I have kicked things off with him. He ranks the highest of any Atletico player for career YCPG and is also the highest this season for YCPG of any Atletico player with a massive 0.44 per game average this season. He is basically averaging a card every two games this season and given what is on the line and up against Zlatan and Giroud I strongly fancy him for a yellow here.
Theo Hernandez to be Carded
The French international has been a firm favourite of mine in Bet Builders for some time and having a quick glance at the Card Sheet you can see why. Hernandez is probably a slightly better attacker than he is a defender and at times is a little rash in the tackle and is regularly caught of position which partly explains why he is so fond of a yellow card.
Thirteen appearances this season and 4 cards, one of which was red gives you a pretty good indication of how consistent the fullback is at doing the business. Again referring to the Card Sheet you can see he features prominently in all 3 defensive sections for Milan. He is also likely to be directly up against Marcos Llorente who should start at right wing-back. Llorente draws the second most fouls of any Atletico player (1.31) and both he and Hernandez should be a match made in heaven for a card tonight!
Koke to be Carded
We finish of course, with another Atletico player. This time I will look to Koke, who is the skipper of the Spanish side and the man who is expected to set the tone of the game with his aggressive and tenacious style. Koke and his fellow midfielders are extremely aggressive in the challenge when they deem the time right to stop simply holding their positions and begin to press the ball. When the chance comes up to tackle, Koke will be one of the first to make the move and leads the press in that sense.
He is vastly experienced and has been around for what seems like forever in the Atletico midfield. Despite that, he is still only aged 29 and has racked up a mightily impressive 102 club career yellow cards to date. He ranks prominently on the Card Sheet and will likely be up against the extremely tricky Brahim Diaz from Milan who draws on average a hefty 2.71 fouls per game- the most of any player involved tonight. With so much on the line I expect Koke to set the tone with his aggression and he looks another solid pick for a yellow tonight.
