KAA Gent v Antwerp
🏟
Sunday 28th August – 12:30PM KO
Ghent and Antwerp meet each other after they both suffered a big European hangover last Thursday. Antwerp lost 1-3 at home against Basaksehir from Turkey and AA Gent lost 2-0 at the relatively unknown Omonia Nicosia from Cyprus, after losing their first match in Ghent 0-2.
For Gent and coach Vanhaezebroeck there is still a lot of work to do. His team started the season very moderately. The good play of last season’s return round has been lost, and that seems to have a lot to do with the long-term injury of star player Tissoudali. His replacement Cuypers prefers to look for space instead of making the one-on-one move. It is not impossible that Gent will strike on the transfer market if they lose, in order to arm themselves for the play-offs.
For Antwerp and coach Van Bommel, the first defeat of the season hit hard. The club had aspired to a European adventure after investing heavily in transfers last summer. They had their best period in the second half, but could not convert their chances into goals. A clever Basaksehir, with one goal early and two goals late in the game, signed Antwerp’s death warrant in Europe. This leaves Antwerp with one big goal, the Belgian title.
We expect that AA Gent will traditionally claim the ball possession at home, and that Antwerp will patiently try to take over the game. Given the offensive difficulties and inefficiency both teams showed in midweek, we expect few goals.

Kv Kortrijk v Standard
🏟
Sunday 28th August – 1:30PM KO
With a 4 out of 15, KV Kortrijk did not start the season well, but they have been very active in the transfer market recently. With Avenatti, Lamkel Zé and Tanaka, KVK managed to sign three new players. For Avenatti, it is coming home. The tall striker sparked the season 2018-2019 in Kortrijk by scoring fifteen times in 32 games. Afterwards, he went to Standard, but that did not turn out to be a successful marriage and loan spells to Antwerp, Union and Beerschot also ended in a halt. He will want to prove himself against his former club Standard, although he is doubtful with a slight muscle injury.
Standard are in danger of having another difficult season, having missed their start in the league by just four out of fifteen, and are already in the bottom of the table. There could be a huge turnaround in the level of play and results, but that only seems feasible if reinforcements are added. In any case, that seems to be the plan for the next few days.
Up front, for example, fresh blood seems to be welcome. Renaud Emond missed numerous chances against OH Leuven last weekend and coach Ronny Deila does not have many other alternatives. With Noah Ohio out of action for a while, only Abdoul Tapsoba remains as a possible deep striker.
Given the offensive struggles of both teams and the scarcity of points, the first goal will be of great importance. The team that scores it will try to defend the lead to get at least a point. Under 2.5 goals has high odds.
