📈 Blackburn v Portsmouth Form & Stats

Blackburn won their first two matches under Michael O'Neill but have then gone on to lose the next two. Whilst they are currently keeping their heads above water from a relegation perspective, they need to guard against improvement from two of the teams below them.

Blackburn were the biggest underperformers versus their expected goals and points in the league at one stage, but as the season has gone on, that performance data has become less impressive. They do still carry a slightly positive xG differential, at home, this is +0.3 xG per match, but I think that Rovers have realized that this needs to be a scrap to get out of.

Portsmouth, as eluded to above, have definitely seen an improvement in performances. Recruitment has helped, as Ebou Adams and Millenic Alli have definitely played a lot of minutes since their signings and provided something more for Pompey. Their xG differential over their last 10 matches is over 1 xG per match.

Their results could still improve, though. They come into this match off the back of consecutive defeats, despite winning the xG battle against both Hull and Wrexham. They had beaten Millwall confidently at The Den and Charlton at The Valley, before those defeats, so there is reason to be confident heading to Ewood Park.

📔 Blackburn v Portsmouth Formation & Team News

Blackburn have confirmed that key midfielder Sondre Tronstad will now miss the rest of the season through injury. Kristi Montgomery and Adam Forshaw will be vying for that place alongside Moussa Baradji.

Michael O'Neill has switched Blackburn back to a back five, with natural balance provided by Eiran Cashin on the left of the three central defenders. This does mean no natural place for January signing Dapo Afolayan, but Yuki Ohashi seems to have returned to form and could start here, partnering either Andri Gudjohnsen or Mathias Jorgensen.

Portsmouth are more than likely going to use a 4-2-3-1 formation with Marlon Pack and Ebou Adams in midfield. Adrian Segecic has been used in the #10 role behind Colby Bishop, with Millenic Alli on the left and either Gustavo Caballero or Harvey Blair on the right.

Zak Swanson and Terry Devlin have nailed down the full back slots, so Mr. Dependable, Connor Ogilvie, has moved into LCB alongside Regan Poole. Conor Shaughnessy is back to fitness, though, and will be in contention for the bench.
