Bolton to Win

There is an element of the unknown when it comes to the match prices. Sheffield Wednesday are definitely without Barry Bannan after his double yellow dismissal on Sunday, and they might also be without Nathaniel Chalobah.

Midfield was Wednesday's strongest department in terms of first-team quality, so it is a blow because the drop-off to the second-choice midfield is so great. Bolton should be able to outclass their higher-tier opponents in this important area of the pitch.

I expect a little rotation in defence as well for Wednesday, whilst Steven Schumacher does have a lot more depth at his disposal for any planned rotation.

Bolton Corner Match Bet

I am expecting a match in which Sheffield Wednesday will have their moments, but Bolton will dominate the chances and the shots, which is a good way of generating corners.

Leicester City were able to do this against Wednesday on Sunday and won the corner count 13-3.

Bolton didn't win the corner count away at Stockport, but they did win seven corners that day.

The reason that this multiplies the price is that it is often the case that the team that leads doesn't win as many corners whilst they are in front.

There is an element of truth to this, but Bolton led against Plymouth after scoring on the 21st minute and yet went on to win the corner count by a wide margin, 8-3.

John McAtee to Score Anytime

The first trick here was trying to work out who would start centrally for Bolton. McAtee is not an out-and-out #9, but if he started, then he would likely be the major goal threat.

Amario Cozier-Duberry looked like a potential option here but his blistering start to the season has been in more of a providing capacity. He has only had shots worth 0.15 xG to this point, but he has created five chances in two matches, two of which were big chances.

McAtee should benefit from Duberry's work out wide and get some encouraging chances to score here.

Bolton Looking to Improve Dreadful EFL Cup Record

For a club that is as steeped in EFL progress in my memory as any other, their recent record in the tournament is horrific.

Bolton reached the quarter-finals stage or better in five of ten seasons between 1995 and 2005, reaching the final twice in that time.

In the last 12 years, they haven't passed round three; however, they have at least won their opening round in the last four seasons, perhaps standing them in good stead here.

🔵 Sheffield Wednesday Have Little Room to Spare to Rotate

There will be some part of Wednesday's squad and staff that will be glad of this tie. It gives them another chance to get their fitness up following a very curtailed pre-season, and it eases them into the campaign a bit more without worrying about their league status.

However, it is also almost impossible for them to rotate. This could hinder their competitiveness here but also affect who might be fully fit for the weekend as well.

Either way, progress in this competition is unlikely to be top of the list of priorities for the season.

📊 Bolton v Sheffield Wednesday H2H

This is a head-to-head that goes WAY back.

First played in 1890, there have been 137 meetings between the two in competitive football.

Wednesday have had the better of things historically with 56 wins compared to Bolton's 41.

Wednesday are in an unbeaten run in the series at the moment, having not lost to Bolton since a Championship match in 2017.

The most recent encounters were in the 22/23 League One season, where Wednesday had the upper hand, winning the away match 2-0 whilst drawing the other meeting 1-1.
