Bolton v Wrexham
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 18th August at 15:00
🏆
Competition: League One
📺
Watch Live: Sky Sports+
Two of the pre-season favourites for promotion take centre stage on Sunday afternoon in League One as Bolton Wanderers entertain Wrexham at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. With midweek Carabao Cup action now out of the way, both can now concentrate on league matters once more.
Something else in common is that these teams were made to work hard to secure maximum points in their maiden match of the campaign last weekend. For Bolton, managed by Ian Evatt, they would net their winning strike 15 minutes from time to defeat Leyton Orient 2-1 away from home. As for Wales-based Wrexham, who are back in the third tier again after 19 years away, they took an early 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes but were in the end forced to scrap out a 3-2 triumph over Wycombe Wanderers.
Wanderers are aiming to go one better following back-to-back failed play-off attempts to reach the Championship, whereas The Red Dragons are hunting down a third consecutive promotion to please their high profile owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Bolton v Wrexham Best Bets
➡️ Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals @ 2.0 with Paddy Power
The Wycombe game showed the good and bad of Wrexham, and a strong opponent such as Bolton would likely have punished them greater than Wycombe did. Still, they will play to their strengths and look to put Wanderers under pressure and they certainly possess the capabilities to do so.
Bolton are an established club at this level and have made the play-offs in back-to-back seasons. They won’t have been totally happy with the performance at Leyton Orient and they will be eager to put on a better show here in their first league home match of the season in what is a televised event.
The recommended bet on Sunday is Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals. It is two clean sheets out of Wrexham’s previous 14 on the road since the start of the year, which is where they are at their most vulnerable given how super impressive their home form is. Travelling to a top team like Bolton will see them under the kind of pressure they may buckle under, although Evatt’s side did not totally convince in the bigger matches last season, hinting at a vulnerability of their own.

📊 Bolton Form and Stats
Bolton may have started their league campaign earning three points away at Leyton Orient but digging beyond this reveals that they’ll likely need to improve moving forward. Despite being on the winning side, they were second-best in the xGF battle; recording a figure of 0.85. That being said, it was the first game, and last season they ranked second to league top scorers Peterborough United based on xGF in League One.
In the previous campaign, they had no issues scoring goals considering they managed 86 in the regular season, which is an average of 1.87 per match, it is arguably their record in the big matches that is why they didn’t earn automatic promotion. In their league season battles versus top-six opposition they won two, drew six and lost two. Also, all bar one of the home encounters in this mini-series featured both teams scoring, which offers hope to Wrexham finding the back of the net on Sunday.
One good way for Wanderers to give themselves the best chance of getting the result they want this weekend is to keep 11 men on the pitch. To say they are a committed team is something of an understatement as only two clubs in League One last season received more red cards than Bolton. They may not have suffered a home league loss in the league regulation season since Bristol Rovers earned a 2-1 victory in December 2023, but this was also one of those occasions when Evatt’s side had a man sent off. That player in question is defender Ricardo Santos, who has been sent off a total of five times since signing in August 2020.
📊 Wrexham Form and Stats
Wrexham have been on a rollercoaster ride for a couple of years now given the success they have enjoyed both on and off the pitch. Extending from the end of the previous campaign, Phil Parkinson’s side are currently enjoying a six-match winning run in league action. Within this period they have averaged 3.33 goals scored per match and six of the 20 goals scored came beyond the 80th minute, proving they will play until the very end.
The Red Dragons clearly did a lot right to win promotion but the fact is that their away record wasn’t so attractive compared to that of their home form. STōK Cae Ras is simply a fortress and Wrexham possessed the best home record in the fourth tier in 2023/24. On the road, they certainly were not bad but they are more vulnerable. Since the beginning of 2024, they have retained only two clean sheets out of a possible 14 in all competitions. Goals are still normally on the agenda, however, as those contests averaged 2.86 goals per game and 71.43% featured both teams scoring.
⚔️ Bolton v Wrexham Head-to-Head
With Bolton more often than not plying their trade in higher levels of English football and Wrexham lower down that particular spectrum, it is unsurprising that there has have been any recent head-to-head encounters.
With this being Bolton’s first home league battle of 2024/25, one good omen comes from them being unbeaten in their first home league encounter in each of the last three seasons; scoring exactly three goals each time. As for Wrexham, only once across the previous eight seasons have they lost their first away league fixture of the campaign. This was in 2020/21 when they lost 1-0 to Solihull Moors.
