Brentford v Everton

The late Saturday afternoon kick off in the Premier League sees Brentford take on Everton at the Brentford Community Stadium in what looks to be a really interesting fixture. Thomas Frank and his Brentford side have enjoyed a solid enough start to their third Premier League campaign and currently sit mid-table. Before losing 1-0 to Newcastle United last weekend, the Bees were unbeaten in all competitions and will be in a confident mood heading into this game in search of a first home win.
In stark contrast, Everton have made their worst start to a Premier League season since 1994/1995, something that Sean Dyche needs to address; and quickly. The only point, and indeed the only goals they have managed both came in a 2-2 away draw against Sheffield United. The other four matches have seen them lose without scoring a goal which must be concerning for even the most loyal of Everton fans.
During the Premier League era, the head-to-head record between these sides is fairly even. In the same fixture last season, the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw with Everton winning the reverse fixture 1-0 at Goodison Park. In the 2021/2022 campaign, Brentford completed the double over their opponents in the league while Everton ran out 4-1 winners in the FA Cup 4th round.

African duo to pile the pressure on Dyche?
Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo have started every Premier League game for Brentford this season and are beginning to forge a powerful partnership up front for the Bees. Assisted by German Kevin Schade, often used as an impact substitute, the trio have been a lot to handle for opposition defences.
Mbeumo in particular has been in fine form having scored four goals in the first five games of the season, including a brace against Fulham. The Cameroon international also scored in his country’s 3-0 win over Burundi during the international break. Wissa himself has also been on target, scoring two in his five appearances and the DR Congo man looks set to eclipse his tally of seven from last season.
Having joined Brentford from Freiburg last summer, Schade’s emergence has been rewarded with a recent call-up to the German national team.
The midfield craft and knowhow of Danish duo Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen allows the forward trio to break defensive lines and trouble the opposition, something which won’t be lost on Dyche heading into this showdown.
Brentford Team News
Saturday’s game is likely to come too quickly for Brentford pair Kristoffer Ajer and Mikkel Damsgaard who are both nearing a return to action. There are some concerns defensively as Ben Mee may miss out having picked up a minor knock against Newcastle United and Rico Henry is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Neal Maupay is ineligible to face his parent club having rejoined Brentford on loan from Everton. Therefore, Wissa and Mbeumo will lead the attack. Frank may however opt to include Schade in a front three as he did in the last home game against Bournemouth.
Assuming the German gets the nod, Brentford will likely employ a flat back four with Ethan Pinnock and Nathan Collins forming the centre back partnership if Mee doesn’t win his fitness race. Vitaly Janelt will anchor the midfield alongside mainstays Norgaard and Jensen.
Can Beto provide the answer for Everton?
Everton have only managed to score twice in the Premier League this season, both of which came in their last away game at Sheffield United. The lack of goals will no doubt be a concern for the Toffees and they will look to marquee summer signing Beto for answers. With Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling with both injuries and form, the focus is certainly on Everton’s new frontman.
The Portuguese star signed from Italian club Udinese for £25.8 million and will be looking to open his Premier League account in West London. Beto will be hoping for decent service from a very athletic and energetic Everton midfield. Idrissa Gueye, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Amadou Onana have been wasteful at times this season, but there is no doubting the potential of the trio in the centre of the park. Onana linked up well with Beto for his goal at Doncaster and Everton will be hoping these partnerships begin to mature and flourish as the season develops.
Everton Team News
Sean Dyche has some injury concerns ahead of his side’s visit to London, somewhere they haven’t won since May 2021. Everton need leaders right now, but club captain Seamus Coleman remains an absentee with a knee injury and is unlikely to return until late September.
Jack Harrison is yet to feature under Dyche following his loan move from Leeds United while Andre Gomes also remains in the treatment room and hasn’t featured since a pre-season friendly against Sporting Lisbon. The midfielder was close to leaving the club in the transfer window with Turkish giants Fenerbahce reportedly interested.
James Tarkowski will be partnered by either Jarrad Branthwaite or Michael Keane in central defence. Keane returned to the bench in the 1-0 loss against Arsenal having recovered from a recent knock. The aforementioned Gueye, Doucoure and Onana are likely to be joined in midfield by Arnaut Danjuma and Dwight McNeil with Beto leading the line hoping to address Everton’s woes in front of goal.

✅ Everton double chance
📈
Odds: 2.00
Everton certainly come into this one as the underdogs and are priced up at 4.33 for the victory as they look for a change in fortune. Dyche will know the importance of this game in the context of his tenure at the club and a loss could spell trouble for the former Burnley manager.
The 52-year-old has often got his sides performing best when their backs are against the wall and he’ll certainly have his players fighting for the badge.
Brentford are still looking for a first home win this season, but are typically strong on their own patch having only lost to Newcastle United and Arsenal last season. However, there were seven draws for away sides and after a sluggish start at the Brentford Community Stadium last term, there is optimism for Evertonians.
Everton double chance is the play here.

🎯 Yoane Wissa to have 1+ shots on target
📈
Odds: 1.40
Wissa leads the shot statistics for the Bees this season having taken a staggering 20 in the five matches played so far, that’s 12 more than Mbeumo. Interestingly, six of Wissa’s shots have been on target which means he’s averaging one per game.
Everton have rotated their defenders this season and don’t yet have a settled back four. This could play into the hands of Brentford’s attack and Jordan Pickford could be forced into a number of saves. Wissa is almost certain to be in and around the action and one shot on target seems a safe bet.

🎯 Beto to have 1+ shots on target
📈
Odds: 1.57
Dyche was questioned in the media this week as to whether Beto could be partnered by Calvert-Lewin upfront. The manager believes it’s too early for such a relationship to develop, but hasn’t ruled it out as they look to address their lack of goals. This could pave the way for the Portuguese man to play a leading role.
Everton have averaged five shots on target during the current Premier League campaign (with that average increasing to six if you discount the Arsenal game). Their current predicament in front of goal is certainly not for the want of trying and this could be the game where the tide turns, with Beto in particular backed to have an impact.
The away side are fancied to be aggressive in the game and this should lead to plenty of chances for Beto to test Mark Flekken in the Brentford goal. The forward is already averaging 2.62 shots per 90 minutes, and just needs to work Flekken for this leg to land. Dyche’s new star man could grab a goal, but backing one shot on target seems to be a solid selection.

🚩 Over 2.5 Everton corners
📈
Odds: 1.20
There should be plenty of driving runs from midfield with the energy of Gueye and Onana, accompanied by the width and pace from the full back areas. Danjuma and McNeil will try to hit the byline to put balls in for Beto and Calvert-Lewin, should the Englishman feature from the bench.
Everton have averaged six corners per game across their opening five matches and failing to register three or more only once, which came against Arsenal last weekend. The Gunners dominated possession with Dyche holding out for a smash-and-grab win, therefore, opportunities from set pieces were at a premium. Taking this game out of the equation, the average corners jumps from six to 7.25.
Considering Everton have played against sides that set up similar to Brentford, there is every chance the corner count could rack up again. The Toffees managed a minimum of six corners against Fulham, Wolves, Sheffield United and Aston Villa, so achieving three seems a realistic possibility here.

✅ Everton double chance
📈
Odds: 2.00
It may be too much to expect of Everton in their current plight to comfortably roll over a solid Brentford outfit, so the Double Chance market is retained. However, a Dycheian defensive display could allow the away side to keep their opponents at bay, while hitting them on the counter-attack. A low-margin game seems likely.

🎯 Yoane Wissa to have 1+ shots on target
📈
Odds: 1.40
Wissa gets the nod to find yet another shot on target against an Everton defence that has allowed 23 in five games this campaign.
The versatile forward has the ability to test Jordan Pickford from a variety of angles and should find space to receive the ball with his spatial awareness and intelligent movement.

🎯 Beto to have 2+ shots on target
📈
Odds: 3.75
Beto was understandably starved of service in the game against Arsenal, but this is a different proposition altogether and there should be plenty of opportunities to come his way in this one. There have been some really encouraging signs in recent weeks as Beto has linked up well with Danjuma in particular. Backing an additional shot on target drives up the value significantly.

🚩 Over 3.5 Everton corners
📈
Odds: 1.57
Everton only managed one corner against Arsenal, such is the nature of a possession-based Mikel Arteta team, but the next lowest total they have posted in any league game this season is six. Boosting the corner count from three to four makes plenty of appeal and elevates the odds. Furthermore, Brentford have conceded an average of 5.4 corners in the league this season, fuelling optimism around this selection.
