Brentford v Tottenham

📅
Kick Off: Sunday 2nd February at 14:00
🏆
Competition: Premier League

Ange Postecoglu’s side have failed to win any of their last 7 games in the top division, most recently falling to a relegation-threatened Leicester side at home. This run of form leaves them in 15th place, just 8 points off the drop zone in a scenario that seemed unthinkable at the start of the season.

The picture looks a lot brighter for Thomas Frank’s Brentford side who sit 11th in the Premier League, 15 points off the drop zone and will be targeting a top-half finish. Brentford’s home record really stands out - they’ve won 7 of their 12 games at the Gtech Community Stadium this season which is a home record only bettered by Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Bryan Mbeumo to Score or Assist 🔄

As mentioned above, Brentford have been really strong on home turf this season, they’ve scored more goals than anyone else at home (29) and Mbeumo has been a massive factor in this.

He has registered 17 goal contributions across his 23 Premier League appearances this season (14 goals, 3 assists). He sits top of Brentford’s scoring charts and is 2nd in the assists leaderboard, only behind Mikel Damsgaard (8). Tottenham are really struggling for any kind of defensive discipline or organisation, a fresh injury concern to Radu Dragusin will only increase the pressure on a Tottenham backline that has conceded 2+ goals in each of their last 5 Premier League games, with Mbeumo in pole position to take advantage.

Mbeumo scored in Brentford’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace from the penalty spot last time out, a duty that offers him another route to goal. Overall, he has had a hand in 40% of Brentford’s 42 goals in the Premier League this season, evidencing how important he is to the West London side. He opened the scoring in the initial meeting between these sides after just 1 minute, he also had 3 shots on target during that game.

Yoane Wissa to have the First Shot on Target for Brentford & Richarlison to have the First Shot on Target for Tottenham

18+, Please Gamble Responsibly, #Ad.

Wissa has had 25 shots on target across his 20 Premier League appearances this season (1.42 per 90). He leads the Brentford squad in this particular metric and his 11 Premier League goals are only second to Bryan Mbeumo in Thomas Frank’s squad. Wissa was injured for the initial meeting between the sides but Brentford managed 6 shots on target, reflecting their average of 5.1 shots on target per game in the Premier League this season - a record only bettered by 5 sides in the division.

Richarlison has come into the Tottenham side as a striker following an injury to Dominic Solanke. He scored in Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Leicester in their last Premier League game and had 3 shots in Tottenham’s Europa League victory over Elfsborg.

He’ll certainly get service in this Tottenham side who are averaging 5.5 shots on target per game. Overall, Richarlison is averaging 1.36 shots on target per 90 across his 8 Premier League appearances this season. 12/1 offers good value here.

🔍 Brentford v Tottenham Players to Watch

🔴 Christian Norgaard

Norgaard has committed 27 fouls across his 20 Premier League appearances this season (1.50 per 90). He’s Brentford’s designated destroyer and is often the player to engage with the opposition’s attacking midfielder.

Tottenham have some very technical players in this area of the pitch which can cause problems for Norgaard early on here. With James Maddison a doubt for this game, he’ll be up against Lucas Bergvall who is averaging 1.62 fouls won per 90 across his 16 Premier League appearances this season.

Brentford committed 9 fouls in the initial meeting between these sides in North London and while Norgaard is a very short price to commit a foul here, we can take advantage of odds of 1.70 for him to sin in the first half.

Dejan Kulusevski

Kulusevski has arguably been Tottenham’s best player in a season marred by inconsistency. The Swedish international has registered 10 goal contributions across his 23 Premier League appearances this season (6 goals, 4 assists) whilst averaging 0.68 shots on target per 90.

This average tends to increase when Kulusevski is played on the right as opposed to in midfield, a role he is expected to be deployed in here. Kulusevski had 4 shots, with 1 finding the target in the initial meeting between the sides earlier in the season.

Pedro Porro

Pedro Porro is the only member of Spurs’ backline that has managed to avoid any serious injuries this season, emphasising how much Tottenham have had to contend with defensive absences this term. He’s very forward-thinking and often takes up the position of a winger, as evidenced by his 7 goal contributions this season (5 goals, 2 assists).

One area that really stands out when it comes to Porro is winning fouls, he’s averaging 1 foul won per 90 across his 23 Premier League appearances this season and was fouled once in Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Brentford earlier in the season. He’ll be up against Kevin Schade who is averaging 0.84 fouls committed per 90 in the Premier League, and will also lock horns with an out-of-position Keane Lewis-Potter when he’s in advanced positions.

💻 Brentford v Tottenham Form and Tactics

Thomas Frank has continued to revolutionise his Brentford side to meet the ever-increasing demands of Premier League football. Brentford’s front 4 have really stood out this season, Mbeumo and Wissa are obvious players that people associate with Brentford, but the emergence of Kevin Schade and Mikel Damsgaard have made a real difference to Brentford in offering variety in attacking areas.

Brentford can be really tough to break down, but this hasn’t resulted in the defensive discipline you would expect - Thomas Frank’s side have shipped 40 goals across their 23 games this season. Opposition sides usually target Brentford down their left-hand side where Keane Lewis-Potter has been playing as an out-of-position left-back, Tottenham are strong on this side of the pitch with Porro and Kulusevski, so it could be an area to watch here.

Tottenham’s tactical approach is difficult to break down, Ange Postecoglu sets up his side in a 4-3-3 shape with the defensive line very high, sometimes comically so when looking at the personnel Tottenham currently have to pick from in defensive areas.

Tottenham are quite good in the final third, they usually find the back of the net at least once with the quality of players like Son and Kulusevski shining through regardless of the tactical set-up. There is a lack of balance in the Tottenham side and they can get bullied at times, as they were in their 3-2 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park a few weeks ago.

Neither of these sides enter this contest in great form, Brentford have only managed to win 2 of their last 10 games across all competitions (v Southampton and Crystal Palace), but Tottenham won’t see this as a massive point of difference, having not won in the Premier League in 7 games themselves.

Goals are usually guaranteed with these teams, but backing either with confidence to get a result looks to be quite difficult, setting up what could be an entertaining match.
